Chance me? American University ED1

Hi! I’m currently a senior in high school and American is my top school. I am planning to major in international relations, while minoring in French and Arabic.

Here are my academics stats:

  • I’m not planning to submit my SAT score since it’s test optional but it’s 1190.
  • My gpa is 3.49 unweighted and 3.63 weighted.
  • I go to a large public high school in Oregon with 1700 students.
  • I’ve received A’s & B’s except for two C+’s during freshman and sophomore year in biology and chemistry.
  • Sophomore year classes: Yearbook, Lit & Comp 2 honors, AP Human Geography, French 2, Yearbook, Chemistry, Geometry, Aerobics.
  • Junior year classes: AP Language & Composition, AP US History, Human Anatomy, French 3, Algebra 2, Yearbook, and TV Broadcasting.
  • Senior year classes: AP Statistics, AP Government, French 4, Yearbook, Narrative & Composition Studies (Film to Lit), Earth Science, and TV Broadcasting

EC/Other activities info within school:

  • Yearbook editor-in-chief currently, Junior editor last year, and part of the staff during freshman and sophomore year
  • Producer for TV Broadcasting. I have a passion for broadcasting and my school lacked a course in it so during freshman year I founded a course in TV Broadcasting by petitioning to my principal and the addition of this course replaced the “Video Arts 3” course. Now we have a school broadcast which we didn’t have before. It’s a popular elective for students.
  • President of French club. We do fundraisers and community service as well as cultural and language activities. This is also my fifth year taking French.
  • I have been a designated school photographer since freshman year and my photos are used in the yearbook, newspaper, website, and social media accounts.
  • Member of my schools multicultural club.
  • I’m graduating with an honors diploma.

EC/Other Activities outside of school:

  • I play on a local high school Varsity Girls’ rugby team for three years
  • I speak very good conversational Arabic. I have a pen pal from the Middle East I talk to on the phone with daily and during this time I’ve picked up speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills in Arabic. This is something I wanna pursue in college.
  • I’ve been taking acrobatic dance classes for 5 years and I mentor the younger students within the class.
  • I volunteer for my dance studios kids camps during the summer
  • I am skilled in acro, ballet, jazz, tap, and contemporary dance. I also have a background in gymnastics.
  • During the summer and school year I assist for a chef at youth culinary camps my local community college offers. This is paid.
  • In 9th grade I volunteered for Kids Camps at a local museum.
  • I was third place in a state wide video competition about safety in the workplace.

Other:

  • I’m flying to DC this weekend and going on a campus tour.
  • I have very good letters of recommendation as I am extremely close with my teachers and counselor.
  • I’m writing my essay about how I founded the class in 9th grade and how it’s progressed and my love for broadcasting and international news/studies/statistics.
  • I may mention that I want to study abroad in Morocco (French & Arabic) or France and another Arabic speaking country on my why American supplement, since American has amazing study abroad opportunities.
  • If I don’t get into American I plan on applying to George Washington, Loyola Marymount, Emerson, Fordham, Middlebury, and DePaul. What are my chances?

I’m hoping since I’m applying ED my chances are better than normal admission. American is my dream school. Thanks so much!

I think you have a strong chance. You stats are decent, your language skills are a huge plus, nice ECs, and AU loves ED. something like 80% acceptance for ED. We visited last year and my D definitely preferred GWU, but it’s a personal preference. My friends at the Pentagon say tons of AU students intern there.
