Your GPA is going to hurt you the most. Its quite low by Amherst standards, and your class rank isn’t great either. In addition, your ECs are just average. I think it’s going to be tough.

Sent from my HTC VLE_U using CC

Thanks! The thing is, I would have been…say… top 10% in another school that is less competitive (with the same gpa). Pretty much the top quarter at my school is 4.0+ (out of 5.0). In addition, I write good essays. The ECs are not numerous, but are ones I didn’t just put there for the sake of it. I enjoyed every single one of them. But yes, I realize my gpa isn’t going to help.

I personally think your GPA is pretty weak… but given that you are good at writing essays, explain why your GPA in your essay ! (But not directly… u knw what i mean…)

Good Luck

Amherst and other top schools want students that are at the top of their class . Why wouldn’t they take somebody that is is in the top 20 percent below you? Show them something that is special about you.

Good luck.

Bunch of pretentious elitists there … you’re better off at a bigger school with “real” people. The place is a “bubble” of overrated self importance.

Our local school councelors are very turned off by the place.

OP, please ignore amfreborg. He has made unfounded comments about Amherst before. He must have thought highly of it at one time since he did apply ED last year and got deferred.

Amherst has real people that don’t live in a bubble of self importance. There is no disputing that Amherst is a leader in socio economic and racial diversity.

Well said GA2012MOM…S is at Amherst and has found his classmates to be for the most part friendly and down to earth.

Their Latin motto translates to “Pretentious Irrelevance”

I agree with the prior posters as to Amherst being a long shot for you, nihapara. Your SATs are fine, but grades/class rank will make it tough, particularly without some other hook. As to amfreborg, he’s full of sour grapes. My S is a freshman at Amherst and loves the college and his classmates.
