Chance Me Amherst ED!

Hey all, I really want to apply to Amherst College ED, but I want to know my chances of getting in.

Male from New York. South Asian heritage (Bangladesh) and Muslim. I plan to study either biology, english, government, or a combination of the three in college (not sure if any of this matters, but thought I'd include it).
GPA UW: 3.85
Top 5% out of a class of 580 at a mid-to-high level public school. My grade is super competitive and so that's why my rank isn't higher.

SAT: 2220 (720 M 800 CR 700 W)
SAT Subject Tests: 730 Math 1, 670 Lit

Freshman Courseload:
AP World History
Sophomore Courseload:
AP World History (4), AP Statistics (4)
Junior Courseload:
AP Biology (4), AP US History (4), AP Physics B (2), AP Language and Composition (5)
Senior Courseload:
AP Economics (Macro and Micro), AP Comparative Government and Politics, AP Literature and Composition, AP Chem, AP Calc AB, AP Psych
I've been in all Honors classes throughout high school aside from these AP classes.

EC's:
Debate Team (9,10,11), secretary in 11
Math Team member (9, 10, 11)
Science Club/Environthon Member (9, 10, 11)
Model UN Secretary (11), club was founded this year
National Honors Society (10, 11, 12), secretary in 12
National History Honors Society (11, 12)
National French Honors Society (10,11, 12), Vice President in 11 and 12
Student Government (9, 10, 11, 12) Treasurer in 9, Secretary in 11 and 12
Part of my class government responsibilities have included being an integral part of the construction of a 9/11 monument in our school courtyard; I was a major planner, organizer, and fundraiser for this. Thought it was a pretty cool tidbit.

Sports:
JV Cross-Country (9,10, 12)
JV Track and Field (9, 10, 12)

Volunteer Work:
Volunteer at local hospital radiology/nursing departments
Volunteer at local library
Various volunteer assignments, such as Thanksgiving food drives, cancer fundraising events at hospitals, etc.
150+ hours

Misc.:
I attended the Columbia University Summer Program for high school students, where I took a creative writing workshop.
I've had writing, from creative work to personal essays, published in a few different places.
My essays and teacher recs are very good .
I've won a handful of school awards but nothing on a higher level.

Thanks!

Amherst ED: Reach

What are your matches/safeties?

Is it like a reach that I have not shot at getting into or a reach that I could possibly get into?
Matches are Emory, UC Berkeley, UCLA, Haverford, Vassar, Wesleyan, and Hamilton
Safeties are Colby, Colgate, Kenyon, and Bates

Amherst ED is reachable.

Vassar: Reach
Wesleyan: Reach
Hamilton: Match
Colby: Match
Colgate: Match
Kenyon: Low match/Match
Bates: High match
Haverford: Match
Emory: Match
UCLA: Match
Berkeley: Match

Definitely match

Thanks Catria and NiceStudent, I appreciate the input!
Anyone else with opinions/suggestions?

A friend of mine got into Amherst last year. His test scores were above yours, but extracurriculars nothing special at all.
Feel free to pm me and I’ll provide more information, so you will be able to estimate your chances. :)

Reach. Your AP exam grades don’t reflect the “rigor” of your high school. If it truly was very competitive, your AP scores should have been higher. That’s going to raise some flags about your your school’s difficulty and therefore your GPA.

Amherst: Reach

Also, why didn’t you do your sports in junior year? Might look bad…

Chance Back?
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1559607-chances-getting-into-bu.html

I know my AP Exam scores are low, that’s probably the low point of my application. But it didn’t have anything to do with my high school, I really didn’t put much work into studying for them, that’s why I did so poorly. Also, I didn’t do sports in my junior year because I wasn’t one of the top guys on the team and it took a lot of time, so I decided to focus more on academics and other extracurriculars like clubs and writing.

Thanks again to everyone, and if anyone needs any more information let me know

I think you sound like a really great student and you have done a lot of hard work, but I didn’t see anything that jumped off the paper for me for Amherst. ED helps but from what I understand for every one of you, you have 10 clones standing right next to you.

Are you US born or naturalized or having to apply as international or anything?

Have you thought about using your common app essay to focus on what it’s like being a young muslim in the US today? These are all things I think would make you stand out, plus help you mitigate the part where being asian can work against you.

Amherst is a reach for anyone. I agree with everything else Catria said, though some of the schools on that list aren’t ones I know much about.

Yankee1995,
I understand what you’re saying. I am US born, so wont be applying as an international student. I was planning to use my essay to talk about my passion for writing, but I might be able to weave in a bit about my heritage and religion. Do you think that would help me?
Thanks for the input!

Also, a question for everyone,
Do you think I have a better chance at getting into Cornell ED?

Cornell ED: Reach (but lower than Amherst ED)

Thanks. Anyone else with anything to add?

Amherst ED: High Match/Low Reach.

Cornell ED is still a reach but a lower one. Are you a good writer? If not, both are very high reaches.

Yes, I’m a very good writer. Thanks for the input!

Anyone else? bumppp
