Weighted Rank: 11/369 (This is the one they use for graduation purposes) (Top 3%)
AP/IB (place score in parentheses): Human Geo (3, freshman year), Calc AB (Should easily be 5), Microeconomics (should probably be 5, at least 4)... taking 5 APs senior year. Also took CLEP Accounting Junior year and got 69 on the CLEP test.

AP Calc BC ( Independent study)
AP Macroeconomics ( Independent study)

Why Penn: Wharton is one of the top business schools in the world and I want to learn in a rigorous environment.
Any dual-degree program essays: Haven't looked into these much, probably just want to major in Actuarial Science.

OTHER QUESTIONS: Like said above, should I take the SAT II Math II test? Their website says either submit the SAT and 2 SAT II subject tests OR ACT plus writing. It also says however that it is recommended that wharton applicants take the Math II subject test... is it worth taking even though i already have ACT plus writing? Also im wondering in general anybodies opinion about going to an ivy vs a state school in a nutshell. Thanks

OP your application is probably a litle below average for Wharton. Your grades/rank are good enough and your ACT is good enough albeit a little low for Penn. I cannot comment on your class rigor but this is impotant. All that does is get you by the first hurdle, Because of the holisic review everything else matters. I cannot comment on recs or essays but you will need to knock them out of the park. Your ECs are weak because there is not enough depth or strong leadership.

AS to your question about SAT IIs, definitlely take some. Math II is highly recommended, so in other words take it.

To give you some anecdotal notion of what gets in to Wharton, here were my son’ stats (he currently attends Wharton and got in ED). We are also from the midwest- Illinois. 4.86 weighted GPA… 3.92uw. we do not have class rank but he was top 2% in a class of about 700. ACT 34 SAT IIs Math II 800, Biology 800, US History 760. 9APS (all 5s except one 4 (Euro History) and one 3 (Spanish)). Important ECs - All the typical honors (NHS, AP scholar, national merit), President Peer Mediation, Internship in finance at Fortune 1000 company, 4 years Hockey (all conf & Captain) and 3 years lacrosse (all conf).

Good luck to you on the process. Remember that Wharton is a reach for everyone. If your passion shows through you may stand a chance.

You definitely need to take SAT Math II for Wharton…that is what “Candidates to The Wharton School are strongly encouraged to take the Mathematics Subject Test, Level 2” means. It wouldn’t hurt to take a second SAT II (or two) in a subject you’re very good at to showcase what you can do.

Also, while 34 is indeed better, from the only information available from Penn that I can see, your ACT Comp of 32 is right smack within the Middle 50 Percent of the enrolled Class of 2017 (31-34), so I’m not quite sure why Glennu says it is “a little low for Penn.” In fact, it is better than at least 25 percent of the ACT Comp score of the enrolled Class of 2017. Your GPA of 3.96uw is excellent and the 4.4w is nothing to sneeze at either.

Note that since your senior year APs scores will not be available for admissions to take a look at, you might want to consider taking AP courses you will have grades for on your transcript by the application deadlines, in place of independent study APs.

My independent studies are actually online courses that my counsler said I will get grades in that will count towards my gpa and everything just like a normal… so i have that covered. Also my school has “block” scheduling meaning i take 4 classes per semester for 90 mins a day, instead of the traditional 8 classes for 45 mins. My counsler gave me a choice for Calc BC and Macro which semester to take them and i did them first semester for the exact reason your saying, to get more AP on my transcript. I also probably will have 1 of the other AP classes 1st semester. And thank you both for telling me to take the SAT subject tests, because i know a lot about the ACT and near nothing about SAT.
