Chance me and I will love you forever.

OK--As long as I have remembered, I have been extremely ambitious (see the username), and I have come from a family full of big shots. Sisters went to BU, Harvard, brother went to McGill. I am pretty smart guy, and I have started a lot of things, but my grades are not perfect. I am currently a male, Jewish, Israeli-American sophomore in a ridiculously competitive private Waldorf School in LI, NY. This school is no joke, and in a class of 25, usually sends half to top 40 schools. I really need insight if as of now I am good enough, and what I could do in the future to get into a top school (my dream is UPenn, Georgetown, GW,...).
Here are my general stats and expectations:
My sophomore year has been OK, I have maintained an overall average of 93 (top 3,4 in class). Unfortunately, my freshman year average was horrible (B+ average due to terrible math and science) and I am afraid it will keep me out of college. Our school doesn't have AP's (the courses are supposed to be "just as hard if not harder"), and I am among the best in my class of 28 people. Please tell me if I have a chance because I am really new to this stuff!

Stats: (expecting after multiple practice tests ive taken)

Anyway thanks! I want to go to schools that offer good political programs, and I already know thats what I want to pursue. I love politics, and I live and breathe it. Do I have a chance at GU?
I would really appreciate it!

bump
id really appreciate any feedback!

and again.
bump…

bump bump bump…
anything?

You look like a good candidate i would say GU is a slight reach. best of luck.

your scores need a little help. I’d feel a lot more comfortable giving you a “strong candidate” label if you had a 32-33 ACT score (which is not hard at all with a Barron’s review book)

its kind of odd but i think im significantly better on the SAT than I am on ACT.
Would it necessarily hurt me if I only sent SATs?

No, it wouldn’t hurt, but you might find it easier to land in Georgetown’s expected range on the ACT instead of the SAT. Prepare well for both of them, take them both (a couple of times if possible), and then see how everything goes. Whatever you do, do not obsess too much over the tests- there are other aspects to the application (yours look pretty good). Good luck to you either way!

Necrophiliac- did you choose Georgetown for next year?

I’ll agree with the above comment: don’t obsess over it. What will make it or break it are the essays so make sure that your essays are stellar (and unique).

pswib, I’m not going to attend GTown but I was in these forums for so long and I was counting on attending GTown for so long that I can’t get myself to stop :/

That’s a shame- I still check other forums for the schools I’m not attending too though.

It looks as if you will be a good candidate for Georgetown. Your politcal related EC’s will probably help you out a ton. I agree with the above poster. Try getting your ACT up if you can. but if you can’t it won’t be a big deal because you appear to be well rounded. Good Luck!

My D applied this year with the following stats and similiar (tho not same) ec’s and got deferred and than rejected. By the way, she got into Cal & Northwestern so it seems pretty random.

GPA - 4.4 W 3.98 UW
ACT - 33
SAT II Math II 720, Spanish 780, Enviro - 730
SAT I - 2100

Sorry I just random saw this but there is a SAT II Environmental???
Do you mean Biology E (Ecology)?

^Randomly*

sbrownell, I don’t think that selection for top universities is “random.” It may seem that way at times, but I really don’t think that it is. Anyway, Georgetown’s acceptance rate is approximately 8% lower than Northwestern’s and 5% lower than Cal’s, according to collegeboard.com. However, I do think that your daughter’s stats should have been sufficient, so that decision did obviously came down to the practically-intangible factors of the application that may make the process seem “random.”

cdz12 - You are correct SATII Bio - E
PSwib - I do think it is somewhat random and a roll of the dice. Even though from Collegeboards you might think these ratings are lower, my D was admitted to Cal dept of Chemistry that admits 186 students a year. So, is the Chem dept admittance rate higher or lower. Don’t really know, but I do think the whole process is a bit of a crap shoot. Sure you need great grades, and lots of EC’s that you are passionate about, but have you seen some of the students with amazing stuff, and they were denied admission from lots of universities that one would clearly say they should be admitted to. I do believe that everyone finds a home, and it all works out in the end. My only advice would be to apply early, and as they say hit your reachs, matches and for sures.

I doubt it’s random but I can attest to that essays are 100% of your admissions chance (given you are qualified with basic stats such as grades and scores). I got into a program where between 10 and 30 kids are accepted internationally from an applicant pool of 5500+ kids. However, I was not “qualified” enough for Yale and Princeton. Reason? My essays to the program rocked and the other two were generic crap.

I guess I would agree, what else do they have to look at, or judge similar Stat kids on. I also think that it is a function of whose reading the essays, and maybe even the overall demographics of the area you are coming from. Anyway. I am a true believer that you end up where your meant to be (for the most part).

Good luck at GT. My son is hoping to be more successful than my D, and attend there in 2011.

I think that an average of 93 in a class of 20 is not that impressive. i think a school that’s 3/4th highest avg is a 93 is quite frankly a joke

^lol it depends how competetive the school is. But the OP has good prospects on the colleges that his brothers/sisters attend…
sbrownell: maybe if your daughter had sent the supplemental stuff in, and talked with admissions about her stat and stuff… they would have paid more attention towards her interests towards Gtown. But I would generalize from my past readings and assumptions that yes admissions can be a game of dice. She must have been pretty qualified to get into a competetive Cal chem program. I think in the end Cal would have been the better institute for her to attend to b/c Cal is better in sciences than Gtown. Gtown is more on politics…econ…and etc…
