UVA (dream school since I was 5)
UPenn ----> ED to Wharton/Classics
UNC
UMich
Duke
Georgetown
------------- that ends the list of schools I'd really like to attend but here are some others
JHU
UC Berkley
University of Florida (instate)
Florida State
U Chicago
Emory
Vandy
Notre Dame
Rice
Dartmouth
Boston College

Thank you for your help, and I will chance you back :0

Because Penn is a SUPER reach if I apply to Wharton. If I get in I’ll be happy going there. I know my chances of getting into UVA are slim because I’m OOS…

Okay, well your current test scores are rather low and your course load does not seem all that rigorous in my opinion. With that said, all of the schools that you that you’d really like to attend are reaches with the state schools being your best chances. You definitely need to add some safeties and matches or raise your test scores because your ECs aren’t anything spectacular either. Any awards or anything?

How is taking a total of 5 AP courses and several advanced/honors courses not rigorous?

I do agree with phillipscott on the fact that you should raise your ACT score by more than just 1 or 2 points if you want to get into UPenn, Dartmouth, and, actually, several of the other schools you listed. I also think you’re ECs are just a tad bit weak. Do you have any leadership positions or awards?

So far it looks a little like this:
UVA: high-reach (since you’re OOS)
UPenn ED: mid-reach
UNC: reach (since your OOS)
UMich: high-match
Duke: mid-reach
Georgetown: low-reach
JHU: mid-reach
UC Berkley: mid-reach (OOS can hurt you a little)
University of Florida: match/safety
Florida State: safety
U Chicago: low-reach
Emory:high-match
Vandy: low-reach
Notre Dame: low-reach
Rice: mid-reach
Dartmouth: mid-reach
Boston College: match

I’d agree that the OP’s course load is rigorous comparative to the average prospective college student, but not all that rigorous when compared to the schedules of other applicants to the top colleges to which this thread refers.

I’m not really sure how you don’t consider this rigorous… I took 2 languages throughout highschool (one being Latin…), and took as many AP courses as I could at the school. I didn’t take a singular regular course when I could have taken an honors course.

lol I don’t know. I feel like that Philipscott is just going around and giving kids bad chances to make them feel bad because he himself got into bad schools.

I’m not giving bad chances. I’m giving chances based on what I have seen in regards to admission to these schools. Actually, I feel as though I tend to be rather optimistic when I give people chances on here. And actually, I haven’t gotten into any schools because I will be a senior this fall. You can completely disregard what I said; that will in no way affect me. I wasn’t trying to be harsh or change the focus of this thread; I was simply trying to give him a “chance” based on how I interpreted his resume. I am not an admission officer and neither are any of you (I presume). So what I say or what they say has no influence, but rather it’s just opinion and perception.

Get your ACT scores up to at least 34. That will put you in a much better position for UVA and even more so for UPenn. While on paper your ECs aren’t the BEST that admissions officers are going to see at either school, if you can display your passion for 1/2 of those ECs through essays/interviews if the school conducts them. Most of the schools on your list seem like mid-reaches, but they’re not out of reach.

UVA is not THAT hard. Your ACT scores may put you down. Your ECs are really good but not extraorindary. If you get your essays down properly, you’ll have a good shot. remember, first and foremost, imporve your ACT score!

Hmm alright… I’m trying to write an amazing essay. Also about the ACT, if I get a 32, that is 99% meaning that there are 10k other kids who got a 32 or higher…

Hey, here are a few scattered thoughts of mine. First of all, your extracurriculars seem really, really lacking. All you have is track and your job at the hardware store (which is really cool). You also have no awards, you’ve gotta bring that 26 in science up (as you very well know). You simply haven’t shown interest or drive (besides academically) on this thread. Perhaps there are more things that you are holding back, or perhaps this is all you’ve got.

Unfortunately, because you are out of state, here are how I see your chances at these schools:

UVA - reach
UPenn - reach
UNC - reach
UMich - low reach
Duke - reach
Georgetown - reach
JHU - reach
UC Berkley - high reach
University of Florida - high match (in-state? you live in NY)
Florida State - match
U Chicago - high reach
Emory - low reach
Vandy - low reach
Notre Dame - high match
Rice - low reach
Dartmouth - reach
Boston College - low reach

To be honest, I think phillipscott was right. You don’t have much of a chance at top tier schools. First, your test scores are much too low. Second, your course schedule isn’t rigorous. You have only taken 2 APs as of the end of junior year. ECs are good though. It all comes down to your essays and recommendations. Good luck.
