Chance me and I'll chance back

Background: Asian male from competitive high school (sends a lucky few students to schools such as Carnegie Mellon, UC's, and the Ivies) looking into majoring in Computer and/or Mechanical Engineering

Stats: 1910 SAT (480 CR, 710 M, 720 W), 32 ACT (will retake in fall to get score up a point or two), 650 SAT II Physics (retaking in fall), and 760 SAT II Math II, 3.63 UW GPA (out of 4.0) and 4.18 W GPA (out of 5.0)

Schools: Georgia Tech, Carnegie Mellon, NYU, SUNY Stony Brook, SUNY Binghamton, SUNY New Paltz, Syracuse University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, University of Pittsburgh

Honors/AP Classes:
Freshman: Honors Geometry
Sophomore: Honors Chemistry, Honors Trig/Algebra2
Junior: APUSH (self studied, 5), Honors Physics, Honors Pre-Calc BC, Honors English 11
Planned Senior: AP Physics C Mech, AP Calc BC, AP English Lit, AP Macro-economics, AP Chemistry

EC's/Work Experience:
Proactive member of school band program; member of Wind Ensemble (our school's top ensemble), Jazz Ensemble, and Symphonic/Full Orchestra
1st year member of theater/Tech Crew
1st year member of Math Team
Member of school science research program and participant in regional science fair
4-month cashier at local supermarket

Some of the schools(CMU,GA tech) are higly competitive so you will have to get your SAT scores and grades up…ECs are fairly good.

It would be great if you reciprocate-

@humblefool‌ probably going to use my act score in lieu of sat, as I did a lot better on that

Should also note income bracket of approx 165k a year. Should I apply to cmu ED?

Definitely agree with what humblefool said about getting your standardized test scores up, 760 Math II is fine though.
I believe 165k a year may be enough to get some financial aid, but if you aren’t confident that you can pay tuition w/out any FA, don’t apply ED.

EC’s are pretty varied, but I see you are only a 1st year member of a few of them. It’d be great if you could get some other leadership positions.

I don’t know much about the other schools, but IMO:
Match/High Match: Syracuse, UPitt
Low Reach/Reach: Georgia Tech
Reach: CMU, NYU

Just get that GPA and math scores up! :)

Chance me back?
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1666347-chance-me-for-rice-cmu-jhu-etc-will-try-to-chance-back.html#latest</a></p>

Try to get SAT up
Pitt and Syracuse are low matches
BU is a match/high match
Low Reach is GTech
NYU and CMU are reach
chance-http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1665744-accounting-chances.html#latest</a></p>

bump
Is it even worth retaking the SAT. Critical Reading is my worst section and I feel like I can do a lot better on the ACT

If you’re going to take the ACT + writing and have done well on practices, I don’t think you need to retake the SAT. It wouldn’t hurt though just to try getting a good superscore!

Also forgot one school UChicago anyone chance me for that as well thks

your ACT score is fine. you don’t necessarily need to retake it unless you really want to. I actually wouldn’t bother based on the schools you’re applying to.

Safe: SUNYs, Syracuse
Match: Boston, NYU, WPI, GA Tech, UPitt, Northeastern
Reach: CMU

chance me back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1661456-chance-me-for-u-penn-tufts-and-brown-new-act-score.html</a></p>

nevermind what I said about U Chicago it doesn’t have engineerin ghaha

Chance me also for Tufts and Northwestern?

Most schools are reach but there may be a chance bc ur math and writing… try giving ACT… reading may be easier

(Go on my page to see my thread to CHANCE)

@IDontKnow4‌ I did take the ACT this past June … got a 32 Composite (35 English, 32 Math, 29 Reading, 30 Science) … planning to take it again and submit it over the SAT since I find that test to be a better fit than the SAT, especially the CR section

32 will prbably get u into Carnegie and Georgia tech… it all depends what major specifically tho

@IDontKnow4‌ Wrote in first post, but possibly Computer and/or Mechanical Engineering

CMU: mid-high reach (engineering is very competitive there) if you have the money, go ED.
Same as above for northwestern
Georgia tech, tufts: low-mid reach
Rest are a collection of matches, maybe a few safeties.
Chance back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1665423-downwards-trend-poor-class-rank-high-aspirations-will-chance-back.html#latest</a></p>

oh alright you might need more for Carnegie… chance me? its on my profile… most recent

Try taking ACT one more to improve your the score. EC Activity is week - Do some voluntary work and show leadership skills. Most Ivy colleges needs min TWO SAT subject tests; improve your Physics SAT subject test. Work hard in improving the GPA in 1st and 2nd marking period of Senior year. Most Ivy colleges requires Mid term GPA report.

@Harrisburg‌ Have done approx. 35 hours community service as part of doing Tech Crew events in District, helping out at community service yardwork projects at elementary schools, raking at local State Park, etc.

CMU is a reach (it is for most people)
Everything else seems like a good match except SUNYs and Syracuse which seem like safeties!
The self studied APUSH looks really like and will probably help a lot! And dont worry about ACT, you’re good with a 32!

Chance: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1666543-chance-me-jhu-yale-harvard-brown-case-western-osu-washu-uchicago.html#latest</a></p>

Your ECs could use work like others said. Try to get into a leadership position in band (1st chair, section leader, whatever). Whatever else you’re in, apply for leadership as well. What do you play BTW? Certain instruments (oboe and bassoon specifically) can be helpful for scholarships, regardless of your major.
