MIT: Reach
Stanford: Reach
Caltech: Reach
UC Berkeley: Match
UChicago: High match
UIUC (urbana-champaign): idk
Purdue: match
Harvey-Mudd: match
CMU: low match
Northwestern: low reach
Brown: low reach
Wash U St. Louis: high match

A solid chunk of the schools you list here are the kind that seem to be reaches for everyone (particularly MIT, Stanford, Caltech, and Chicago). You can never really tell when a student is a good match for any of them, but I think your ECs show that you have a passion for computer science. Schools like these seem to want not only a student with a fantastic record, but one who they know will become a leader in his or her field. Make sure that your essay and supplements emphasize the success you’ve already had in your major.

You’re likely safe at Berkeley, Illinois, Purdue, CMU, and probably even Wash U. The other schools on your list are unpredictable but with your ECs you’re a strong candidate for any of them.

Don’t freak out about your class rank, the rigor of your classes more than makes up for it. Linear algebra and multivariable calculus straight from high school math? Is that even legal?

MIT - Reach
Stanford - Reach if you’re from west coast, High reach if east coast
Caltech - Reach - but you have a fairly good chance here, you seem quite STEM
UC Berkeley - Low Reach if west coast, High match if east coast
UChicago - Reach
UIUC (urbana-champaign) - Match
Purdue - Safety
Harvey-Mudd - Low Reach/ Unpredictable since it’s so small and specialized
CMU - Match
Northwestern - High Match
Brown - Reach (not sure you’d fit in here)
Wash U St. Louis- Low Reach/High match

About the class rank thing:
Since you’re taking college courses and clearly are academically advanced, i don’t think it would mean much, especially considering the tiny difference between top 10% and top 5%.
Your school may report in deciles, in which case it would make no difference at all
Amazing recommendations/evaluations are far better than amazing class rank, so get those teachers to love you

thanks so much guys @coralqueen: Yeah, I am in all likelihood going to balance more with some that are easier to get into for more choices. But since it looks more like at least I am not too hindered by the class rank thing, i am slightly less worried :)

@Nihilus: thanks. i hope the recs go well :D

I think you can definitely get into Wash U and purdue, the rest are some variation of reaches. Your test scores are great and your extracurriculars are impressive the only thing is your GPA. I feel like most colleges are going to be ok with that simply you took challenging classes like it shows you have good work ethic. Good luck

MIT: High Reach
Stanford: High Reach
UChicago: Reach
Caltech: Reach
Northwestern: Low Reach
Brown: Low Reach
Harvey-Mudd: High Match
Wash U St. Louis: Match
UC Berkeley: Match
CMU: Match
UIUC: Low match
Purdue: Safety

Id still say the ivies plus MIT and uchicago are reaches just because it’s so tough to get into them, and your gpa. Yeah your classes are tough, and they will see that, along with your math/sience focus, but there are still people who manage 4.0s with those classes. Not a lot of people, but some. Focus on the essays and I think you could get into at least 1 top school.

You’re a really competitive applicant! Your GPA isn’t that low for all the schools you’re looking at. Besides, getting B’s in English isn’t gonna matter that much because your application makes you seem like an ambitious, math/science person. Those math classes !

Your EC’s show that you, once again, love math. There isn’t that much variety, but your accomplishments in STEM make up for that. Holistically, your application looks excellent!

MIT - mid reach
Stanford - high reach (for everyone :P)
Caltech - low reach
UC Berkeley - match
UChicago - mid-low reach
UIUC (urbana-champaign) - safety
Purdue - safety
Harvey-Mudd - match
CMU - match
Northwestern - low reach
Brown - reach
Wash U St. Louis - high match

I don’t think you have to worry about your class rank because the rest of your demographics are very very good. Ivies are a difficult to predict but I’d say you have a great shot at any of the schools you apply to.
chance me back please?

I would say all the ivies, MIT and Stanford are reaches for you, but they are for everyone. You’re very very well qualified. Your chances fair better at caltech and harvey mudd because of your performance in math. Northwestern is also a low reach to high match as is U Chicago. However I think the rest would be be matches with Purdue as a safety

Most colleges allow you to explain discrepancies in your application, so you can explain about why your freshman grades are worse. Also, your grades seem to have gotten better as you advanced, so that also looks good. Lastly, colleges will factor in what school you go to, so just include a note about your freshman school.

want to PM me your username? I play on chess.com too although my rating is not nearly as high as yours. You really should have played more chess games with such talent, as I am sure you could become an NM at least! (there are lots of scholarships out there for gifted chess players)

but enough about that-- I think that your test scores are very solid, as well as your math prowess. The only thing that worries me is your class rank/ GPA. The common app asks for that information, and colleges prefer someone who is at the top (ok, I am biased because I am first in my class, so try to take this with a grain of salt). My college class teacher has said that the GPA is most important simply because it reflects your overall study habits and character, while test scores and the bunch simply show your potential.

Also, a little more volunteering/ demonstrating a “community-first” attitude in your app would be nice.

My verdict:

All of the colleges are reaches (as they are for pretty much everyone) except for CMU, purdue, and harvey-mudd.

And thx for your post on my thread! I included more information, so if you would tell me your thoughts, I would really appreciate it. :D

maybe I’ll call you when I’m above 2000 again but i major slipped and almost down to 1900 :(

anyway thanks guys! do you guys know some suggestions for what is usually considered second-tier college?? (or some less competitive colleges for STEM)
