Chance me and I'll chance you back!

Hey guys, thanks in advance for chancing me. This is one of my first post, please be brutally honest. I seriously don't know how I'll do in the admission process b/c I fall in a different category than many of you. I have good academics/gpa, but weaker extracurriculars. Well, just take a look:

Objective:

SAT I (breakdown): 2400 single sitting
ACT: none
SAT II: Math2 800, US History 800, BiologyM 790
UW GPA: 4.0? school doesn't report, but I've never had below a 95 in a class
W GPA: 4.727
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): ~top 3 out of 143
AP (place score in parenthesis): CompSci 5, World 5, Stats 5, USH 5, Bio 4, Lang/Comp 3
IB (place score in parenthesis): none
Senior Year Course Load: Calc BC, AP Micro+Macro, AP Spanish, AP Physics C, English electives
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): NMSF, AP Scholar w/ distinction, National Spanish Exam Silver, Headmaster's list

Subjective:

Extracurriculars: basketball team, math club president, computer club president, NHS executive council, Carolina Premier Bank program, Students of Service club, Key club
Job/Work Experience: none
Volunteer/Community service: volunteer at Carolina Medical Center (100+ hrs), Math Buddies tutoring, peer tutoring service (through NHS), school's Key Club
Summer Activities: business camp at UNCC, basketball team camp at Wofford, nothing huge
Essays: Common App (at least 8/10 if I'm being hard on myself), Columbia Supplement Essays (all around 8-9 out of 10)
Teacher Recommendation: Calc BC teacher (9/10), English teacher (she likes me but not very diligent person, probs 8/10)
Counselor Rec: (9/10, he's a pro and knows me well)
Additional Rec: none
Interview: not yet

Other

State (if domestic applicant): NC
Country (if international applicant): USA
School Type: private school, send a handful to Ivies on a good year. my year is super competitive, at least 9 other ppl are applying to Columbia, and every other top school
Ethnicity: Asian (goddamnit, the only part I hate about being Chinese)
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: lol, lets just say that there is no way that I could qualify for FA
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): haha, nope
Major: Economics
Submit date: 12/23/2013 (regular decision)

Just wondering if I even have a chance, or if I just ****ed away another 80 bucks in fees. Goddamn, I swear that my year is literally the most competitive class for the past 10 years. I'm near the top, but with less than 150 kids, colleges won't accept more than 2 from our school, right?

Can you provide a list of schools you want to be chanced for? Preferrably non-Ivies, Ivies are a reach for anyone and everyone .

sure apache, I applied to Wharton ED and was rejected, which sucks since I expected at least a deferral. I also applied to:

HYP
Uchicago
Duke
CMU
Cornell
Northwestern
UNC-Chapel Hill (my safety)

Why are you on the Columbia forum? Go to the forums of the schools for which you actually want to be “chanced.”

HYP - reach
Uchicago - low reach ( depends really on your essays)
Duke - high match
CMU - match
Cornell - high match
Northwestern - match
UNC-Chapel Hill - locked in

Columbia- reach
HYP-reach
Uchicago-low reach
Duke- match
CMU-match
Cornell-low reach/ almost a match?
Northwestern- match
UNC-Chapel Hill (my safety)x- safety

sigh, asking for your “chances” when you have a perfect SAT, a ton of extracurriculars and what appears to be near perfect grades with the toughest coursework.

seriously?

You are going to be identical to a ton of other applicants, it is going to be your essays that is going to be the deciding factor most likely not accounting for things such as legacy or URM. It shocks me there are boards dedicated to “chances” yet there is not one for essay peer review and revision.

@agreatperhaps, thanks, and if you’re referencing John Green, you’re even more awesome.

@tribbs, lol there’s not much difference btwn a 2300 and 2400 at the ivy level schools and their peers. if you compare my EC’s with other people’s, they’re actually kinda weak. add on top that I’m an asian male, and yeah, I kinda have a right to worry about my chances.

@Tarheel714

You’re entirely missing the point of what I am saying.

I think tribbs was saying is that there is no way anyone on here can “chance you”. Your stats are almost perfect. You might be rejected by Cornell and CH and accepted to Princeton and UChicago. It’s a guessing game. My stats are similar to yours but I got a 2020 on the SAT, yet I still got into Columbia.

You seem to know this, but you don’t present a case for yourself other than that you’re a good tester, which isn’t really relevant after you score ~2250. Your extracurriculars are scattered, don’t go beyond the school level, and leadership is questionable. I don’t know what opportunities you have at your school nor how much work/time you put into them, so I could easily be wrong here. But from the information you gave, I get the impression that your activities are superficial and that you aren’t using all of your opportunities in that regard.

Your academic are amazing, that will be a plus; so on the more personal, human side of the application your essays will greatly influence your decision. Hopefully your essays were great! Nobody on here can judge your essays or teacher recommendations. So chancing you is a rough estimate at best. Nevertheless:

Columbia – HIGH REACH
HYP – HIGH REACH
Uchicago – HIGH REACH
Duke – REACH
CMU – MATCH
Cornell – REACH
Northwestern – LOW REACH
UNC-Chapel Hill – SAFETY

Best of luck!

Columbia- Medium Reach
HYP- High Reach (just because you never know what the admissions officers are thinking)
Uchicago- Medium Reach
Duke- High Match
CMU- Match
Cornell- Low Reach
Northwestern- Match
UNC-Chapel Hill- Safety

Good luck! :)
