Chance me and I'll think you're cool

Boston University, Northeastern, UConn, rutgers, NYU, Cornell, Umass Amherst, UNH, Rice, Syracuse, U Rochester, Tulane, USC, Baylor, Lehigh

GPA unweighted: about 3.8-3.9
GPA Weighted: between 4.1-4.2
Class Rank: top 10 out of about 550 students

SAT (only taken once without really studying, plan on taking again):
1820 (CR: 600 M: 600 W: 620)

SAT II (might retake, if necessary):
Biology: 740 World History: 640 Math 2: 580
(probably won't submit math (and history if it seems too low) score unless I retake and do better, or if I have to)

ACT: have not taken

AP Exams:
Biology: 5
Statistics: senior year
Chemistry: senior year
Calculus: senior year

High School: fairly decent suburban high school, many well-qualified students (usually a handful of students that get into top notch schools every year)

Classes: have taken honors at all possible opportunities, except one time in freshman year.
So far: 15 honors classes, 1 AP class (full-year), 5 elective/required classes, 4 foreign language classes.
Senior year (not final): 3 AP classes, 2 electives

Grades: roughly 18 A and 6 A-.....as of the end of junior year, I have never got anything under an A-

Extracurricular Activities:
Recreational soccer (since sophomore year)
Youth group (since freshman year, but skipped junior year)
Hindi school (same as youth group)
Dartmouth Community Medical Lectures (since sophomore year)
Debate Team (sophomore year only)
Free Thinkers Club (junior year only)

Community Service/Volunteer:
Tutored other students through peer tutoring program at school
Idk if this counts but I volunteered during 2008 presidential campaign (held up signs, went door-to-door, stuff like that)
Not much else....this is one of my weak (if not the weakest) areas....Idk maybe I'll try volunteering at a hospital in the fall or key club or something just so I can add a little strength

Honors:
National Honor Society
1st place in Western New England College engineering Competition
St. Anselm Book Award
Best Model UN Delegate
Perfect attendance....?

Also, I have some credits from a local community college

Ethnicity: Indian (of the South Asian variety, not Native American)

Location: Connecticut

NYU- tough shot
Syracuse, Tulane, USC, Baylor, Lehigh- reaches
U Rochester- tough

What about the rest? And what do you mean by tough shot? Is it harder than a reach?

Please don’t apply at NYU. You’ll thank me later.

General advice: you really, really should retake those SAT IIs, and be sure to use some sort of course or clinic for the SAT preparation (anything in the 2000s is good). Call up your local soup kitchen tomorrow, or some other volunteering stance in which you help the less fortunate. It won’t look good that you got on the volunteering bandwagon at the last second, but it’s better than nothing. Get some leadership positions in your clubs.

Comments: GPA and class rank is good. If that’s your SAT score with no effort, then your actual one should be dandy. ECs aren’t too impressive (I’m curious what the Free Thinkers club is hahah do tell), and your volunteering actually isn’t as awful as you think (helping Election of 2008 does count IMO). The honors and community college creds are all helpful…

Boston University: match
UConn: match
NYU: don’t even think about it
Cornell: reach

I don’t know all of the other colleges that well, sorry :p

and I would rather you chance me than think I’m cool, but it’s your choice sir/madame:
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/969844-chance-me-ivys-hs-class-2012-a.html</a></p>

Get involved with volunteering activities a bit more and improve your SAT scores. Try to get into the 2000+ region for these schools and then you will have a better chance. Other than that, your stats look great!

Chance back–>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/969336-chance-unc-wilmington-odu-2.html#post1065333540</a></p>

Thanks a ton! It’s basically debate team except less competitive. But I’m curious about your beef with NYU. Should I not apply because I have little chance or because there’s something wrong with the school itself? And yeah, I’m probably going to study this time around =p
Thanks again

I disagree with kingsize. With your GPA you should be fine at Boston University, Northeastern, UConn, Rutgers, UMass Amherst, UNH, Baylor, Syracuse and Lehigh. USC could still be a reach. Cornell and Rice definitely a long reach. Not sure about NYU or U Rochester, a low reach probably. Your SAT is in the lower range for Tulane and probably some of the others, but your solid GPA will help offset that. It isn’t like your SAT’s are that low.

Thanks a lot! I think I’m going to retake the SAT in the fall…maybe even twice

Don’t use a clinic for the SATs use a book and your brain. You will do fine. That’s what you need to work on right now. Shoot for 2000+.

Yeah I already bought the official college board book. Gonna try to start towards the end of vacation

Zoidberg - Are you already getting the Question of the Day?

Yeah, I do them. But it seems as though the questions are easier than most of the questions on the actual test

I have legacies at WPI and MIT, what are my chances there?

I highly disagree.

Idk, that’s just from my experience

MIT no chance with those SAT scores. WPI definitely a chance, even a good one.

Mid Reach: Cornell, Rice, NYU, MIT(Would be a definite no go if not legacy)
Low Reach: USC, Rochester
High Match: Lehigh
Match: BU, Northeastern, Cuse, Tulane, Baylor, Rutgers, WPI
Saftey: UMass, UNH
Pretty Much In: UConn(instate)

SAT’s will hurt you at the top schools, but your list seems pretty reasonable

Calling MIT a mid reach with an 1820 SAT score is just wrong, legacy or not. It is a hard reach for anyone, look at the admissions stats. And many of those kids that get turned down have scores hundreds of points higher and perfect GPA’s, or maybe 1-2 A-. No, Cornell and MIT are both pretty big reaches, MIT basically off the table. Rice very tough.

The competition for spots at schools of that caliber is the fiercest in history. They simply are rarely offering admission to kids that fall significanly below their average in major categories, and test scores is a major category.

Your GPA and class rank are outstanding. Your course load and AP score are also great. However, your SATs put you in the mid range for U Conn. I recommend that you take the ACTs in September, and the SATs in October and Novermber. You wont’ have the October results back before you take the November test.

Forget about the SAT IIs. You don’t need them for many schools, so unless you improve tremendously, you should focus on bringing up your SATs or ACTs.

U Conn is guaranteed based on your GPA. If you brought up your SATs to about 1400/1600, you would be a candidate for their honors college. That is a big deal.
Why apply to Rutgers, UMass UNH if you are in state for U Conn?

UMDCP, U Wisc Madison and U Pitt are more selective than UConn. Apply Rolling Admissions to whichever of these schools that you like.

Lehigh has median SAT 660 CR, 705 CM and 30 ACT. Lehigh is a reach. Lehigh accepts 1/3 of all applicants. Apply to Lehigh if your scores come up.

CASE, BU and WPI have slightly lower stats than Lehigh, but also accept a higher percentage of applicants. Since you aren’t a perfect candidate, look at these two over Lehigh. You could also look at Stevens in Hoboken, NJ. CASE and WPI have EA admissions. If your ACTs are an improvement over your SAT percentile, consider EA, so that you can have a few more acceptances by December.

After you receive your Sept ACT and Oct SAT scores, and maybe your acceptance to U Conn and another school, decide which reach schools you wish to apply to.

Visit any of the local schools, to demonstrate interest.

I may have missed your major, and assumed it is either engineering or pre-med.

Cornell, MIT, Rice, NYU are a waste of your application money. These schools reject students with similar GPAs and 2100-2200 SATs.

I don’t know anything about Tulane or Baylor.

For future reference, marymac, Tulane’s stats are similar to Lehigh’s. Little lower in the math, little higher in the CR, but overall very similar.
