Chance Me, and the Favor Will Be Returned

Essays:
Should be excellent

Like I said, I will gladly chance you back, so just leave a link. Thanks!

Lol, you seem to be in good shape. Keep it up! :p

You’re stats are fine, so that’s not an issue. The two weak areas I see are community service (on the low end hours wise, it depends on the school but a good amount is somewhere around 200 hours, that’s what the UCs require) and out of school ECs. Your leadership
qualities are great, but you really have two main ECs, and one is a sport. Debate is good, especially as pre-law, but doing a little more would look much better in that extensive common app section.

Vanderbilt (ED and RD): Low Reach
NYU: Match due to stats based admission
U of I-Champaign: Match
Georgetown (EA and RD): Mid to Low Reach
U Chicago: Reach

State schools that don’t really care about ECs will be easy for you with your GPA and decent ACT. Places that have really holistic admissions like UChicago might be put off by the short r

Vandy and Georgetown are low reaches, and I wouldn’t be surprised if you got into both of them. I know one kid from my school, he had a 2180 SAT, Captain of Wrestling Team, Valedictorian, and he got in to Georgetown but that’s about all he had. UChicago is harder than those two though, maybe a reach but not as high as say Stanford or something. Just expand perhaps more on your debate theme, and you should get a great chance of acceptance at any of those colleges. Honestly, you’re a strong competitive applicant to all those schools. And you’re in at UIUC. Good luck!
Now will you please return the favor? Thank you!

@neuromajor

Academic Team is my school’s name for Scholastic Bowl. I probably should have specified that, so that’s my fault. I’ll chance you tomorrow. I’m tired right now, so I’d probably screw something up.

@Achilles09

Thanks! Again, I’ll do yours tomorrow.

Odd question, but for Georgetown (a religious institution) would being an Atheist count as an underrepresented minority of sorts? That probably came off as really offensive, but I do wonder.

@Debater1996, haha that’s a really good question. I heard that most of the student body is Catholic, so I wouldn’t assume that there are many Atheists there. Although they accept many students with very diverse religions (my friend who got accepted was Muslim), I believe that the university has special place in their hearts for Catholics and so Catholicism is important for the university.

I found this piece of information that was quite interesting.

“But while Catholicism continues to play an important role at Georgetown, shifting demographics have led to increased calls for interfaith dialogue and more resources for non-Catholic students. Currently, 47 percent of students identify as Catholic, 27 percent as non-Catholic Christians, 6 percent as Jewish and 3 percent as Muslim.”

So yes I do believe that your religious views will display you as a religious minority kind of

chicago is a reach. georgetowns a low reach. everywhere else, i think your in, especially vandy ED if thats your top choice. good luck!

chance back?
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1519195-chance-me-lehigh-ed-couple-others-will-chance-back.html</a></p>

OP: looking at the list of schools of interest and your background…I would strongly recommend that you apply nonrestrictive nonbinding Early Action to Chicago and Georgetown to have the “best” chance of getting into at least one of them before Christmas. There are only a handful of great private schools that offer nonbinding nonrestrictive EA…Chicago, MIT, Caltech, and Georgetown…Unless you are really DESPERATE do not apply ED to Vanderbilt. I would save the other schools for RD round…Gook luck.

P.S…it may be impossible to get into Chicago if you wait for RD round…even applying from Illinois. So be strategic!

Thanks to all of the previous posters. I’ll have your threads done sometime in the next hour.

Those who posted links, the favor has been returned.

One of my friend got into Vanderbilt with minimal amount of leadership. He was in the top 10% out of 450 students with a 2230 on SAT and only 7 AP classes. He was in a lot of club too with no sports. He got in as a biomedical engineer. I m sure you will get in too since you seem to be better than him in standard test score, class rank, amount of AP classes, and extracurricular activities.

I would say your chances look great for all of those schools. Maybe try for more community service hours. Also, Model UN may be a good extracurricular to try and get involved in considering your interests.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1519427-chance-me-college-please-help-me-pick-out-some-schools.html</a></p>

Unfortunately, my school doesn’t have a Model UN, and I’m too busy with debate to start one. And yes, I have realized the lack of community service, and shall be upping the hours.

Thanks, and I’ll get to yours in a second.

I would consider them all matches. Remember just because people on CC post extremly high scores at schools like these doesn’t mean it’s required. They accept many with 1700 sat+ if you have the money to pay you have the school. A lot of people have high stats and try for schools like Vanderbilt w/ 2400 & the average is like 1800. They aren’t going to attend, it’s just a fallback. I don’t let CC get me down, I know I have realistic chances as does everyone else!

Actually coleworld95, I have to disagree with you. Vanderbilt is a very tough school to get into. The only reason you would get into Vandy with a 1800 is if you were a immigrant seeking refuge, a recruited athlete, or someone with a very unique scenario. Today, it’s even harder as comeptition keeps on increasing. Here, take a look at their SAT and ACT Ranges:

Qualifications of Enrolled Freshmen
Average GPA: 3.75
SAT Math 710-790 range of middle 50%
SAT Critical Reading 690-770 range of middle 50%
SAT Writing 670-770 range of middle 50%
ACT Composite 32-34 range of middle 50%

And a year ago, I believe they actually beat HARVARD’s SAT and ACT Range. HARVARD’s!!
I know plenty of people who got rejected from Vanderbilt with a 2100 or 2200 SAT score.
It’s not so easy to get into Vanderbilt with a 1800.

Actually coleworld95, Vanderbilt is a very tough school to get into. The only people that can get in to Vandy with an 1800 are people who are recruited athletes or people with incredibly unique scenarios. Here is the ACT and SAT range if you don’t believe me:

Qualifications of Enrolled Freshmen at Vanderbilt University
Average GPA 3.75
SAT Math 710-790 range of middle 50%
SAT Critical Reading 690-770 range of middle 50%
SAT Writing 670-770 range of middle 50%
ACT Composite 32-34 range of middle 50%

And a year ago, I believe they beat HARVARD’S SAT and ACT range scores. HARVARD’s!!! Think about that. So I do strongly think that it takes a miracle to get accepted into Vanderbilt with an 1800.

Sorry for posting it twice, it didn’t show me the first one so I posted again

UIUC should be really easy with your stats. Georgetown is a match, and so is UChicago. It probably would have been beneficial if you applied to a few more colleges, and some ivies wouldn’t have hurt either.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1519316-chance-me-ucs.html</a></p>

Vandy’s a low reach. Your demonstrated passion/dedication to debate will help you. NYU is a match(lowish), and so is Georgetown, (albeit a higher match, Georgetown is great for what you are interested in). UChicago is a reach, but if you write killer essays with the sophistication, logic, and creativity that I know debaters of your caliber are capable of, you’ve got a shot. Good luck!
