Chance Me? Andover, Exeter, Blair, Emma Willard, and Madeira

Hi! Thanks so much for looking at this thread.

I'm a current ninth grader who will be applying to boarding school as an international student for next year. So far, I've chosen Andover, Exeter, Blair, Emma Willard, and Madeira. Chance me for these schools, please?

-Straight A student with top-notch recommendations
-SSAT 98th percentile
-Bilingual (English and my native language), plus I'm learning Spanish
-I've played the clarinet for five years and been selected for a prestigious national music festival for the past three years
-Played the keyboard for two years
-Vocal: Indian Classical Music learner for nine years. Will do Choir in boarding school.
-Volleyball: 3 seasons
-Badminton: three seasons, 4 years recreationally. Won two tournament trophies in ladies doubles.
-Cross Country: 2 seasons
-National Junior Honor Society member for two years, volunteer at several community events.
-Young Leaders Gavel Club (offshoot of Toastmasters International) officer for two years: Secretary, President
-Tennis: 4 years recreationally
-Writing: won a short story competition a few years ago, and I'm involved in a few online writing websites. Very good writing skills.

The list feels so small :/

Again, thanks!

Oh, and I also need about $20,000 in FA–is it likely?

If you go to Andover and Exeter they’ll give you the money right away. The tough part is getting in but you have a great profile so there’s is chance. Do not know much about Blair and Madeira. But I think Emma Willard would probably take you, FA there will depend on circumstances like most smaller boarding schools.

Thank you

What do you mean by circumstances?

I’m also applying to Hotchkiss.

That’s not how it works.

I’m a little biased, but I think that Emma Willard would be a good school for you. I’m currently a freshman here and I love it. I’m receiving quite a bit of financial aid, so from what I’ve experienced, they are pretty generous. Madeira seems to have less financial aid, but that might be because of the high amount of day students (I applied there as a prospective day student). Ultimately, I think you should apply to the schools you like and see what happens.
Good luck!

@skieurope‌ Please elaborate? :confused:

@aboutaweekago‌ - Great! Thanks, that’s encouraging  However, I’m an international student, and I heard that Emma’s aid for such is very limited… could you comment on that?
(If you’re a freshman there and I went there next year I would be in your class :o)

Andover and Exeter don’t just “give you money when you get in,” they give you money after you fill out a financial aid form.

@mrnephew‌ - Yeah, I’ve filled out the PFS, although I haven’t submitted yet. I’m doing the FA application at the moment. What I mean is, are they likely to give me money if I get in? I heard that Exeter has limited FA for international students.

Chances are, if they can’t give you FA money, they’ll just flat out reject you.

But considering Exeter’s endowment is just under a billion dollars…

Ah, okay.
Haha, I know… There’s always the chance though. Thanks for your comments :)

Yup. But know that if you get rejected, it most likely wouldn’t be because of FA for Andover or Exeter.

@thatwritingdream Schools will offer FA based upon demonstrated financial need, which may be less than the $20K you think you need.

@skieurope‌ Right… Okay, thanks. :slight_smile:

-So I got my SSAT scores… and they’re actually better than before…!!! Haha, anyway. My %-ile Grade Gender and %-ile Grade scores are different by 1. Which one will schools take?

The higher one.

Oh, /thank you/. You have no idea how comforting that is.

Blair will accept you.

You never know. @PreppyHenry

@PreppyHenry Thank you. I’m really worried about Blair though because they don’t normally give FA to international students. I only applied to it because my interviewer (I did some interviews before applications at a boarding school fair) said that it happens in rare cases, and for me to apply and we’d see.

Lol, thanks for the vote of confidence @mathman1201‌. xD I’m nervous enough.
