Chance me, anyone?

Hey CC,

I'm part of the 2010 class and I just want to know what my chances are getting into the schools of my choices. The thing I'm worrying about is my SAT/SATII scores because I'm a weak tester. But, here you go:

Asian, Vietnamese-American

I'm looking into:
- UC Irvine (1st)
- UC San Diego (REACH #1)
- UC Davis (2nd)
- California Polytechnic: San Luis Obispo (3rd)
- San Diego State (4th)
- New York University (REACH #2) [Only going to be applied to if I actually do consider Journalism
- UC Santa Barbara (5th)

Test Scores:
SAT: 1500 (:/)
SATII: Won't get scores until July but I took Biology E and English
ACT: Taking those in October

Grades:
-Weighted 10-11 GPA: 3.5
-Unweighted: 3.4
Top 30% of Class (not so good, I know)
1 AP (well, 2 if you count next year), 2 Honors (3 if you count next year)

Extra Curricular:
- I've walked AidsWalk every year for 5 years, I'm volunteering there this year
- I'm involved with my school's Link Crew, which is a Freshman support group, aiding incoming freshman. If it helps, I'm in the Elite group (which is a year long commitment instead of just September)
- I took 'Child Development' at my school, which holds the Pre-School every year and I was one of the group teachers...
- I'm in about 4 different clubs including Key Club
- I ran a webzine (fairly successful) from 2005-2007 covering a lot of well known bands and concerts and have conducted several e-mails. I also have photos up on several bands' websites (Paramore being one of them, last time I checked)

Other stuff:
- I write for my school's newspaper and am the 2009-2010 Opinion Editor

I'm looking into majoring in Biology, Psychology, other Pre-Med sciences (this would hopefully lead me into medical school). As my username seems to state, Forensic Anthropolgy is another one of the considered careers, so I'm also looking into schools for that. NYU is my major reach school, and if I do get accepted (fatttt chance) I would go for jouralism or writing in general.

Hope that helps! Let me know if you need any more information!
-Viv

what happened to you webzine?

anyways (assuming 1500/2400 SAT):

 • UC Irvine: Reachy
 • UC San Diego: Reach
 • UC Davis: Reachy
 • California Polytechnic: San Luis Obispo: Reachy
 • San Diego State: Match
 • New York University: No
 • UC Santa Barbara: Reachy

did you recently immigrate? once again, what happened to your website?

I ran out of money to keep the website up but the MySpace is still there with my photos on it (Over Bite (overbitezine) on Myspace) but I’m not sure, my friend that’s running it hasn’t done much, but its prime was late '07. It still ran, or is still running.

My parents are refugees of the Vietnam war. I’m 1st gen.

Why your grades low-ish and your SAT score low? Emotional/Family problems are good topics for essays and can increase your chances slightly. But if you lock up during tests or just aren’t concentrating, then you might wanna consider a CC and then transfer to a UC, since you seem to be pretty high-reaching.

your URM status is a plus too

siglio21, I actually don’t know why. I don’t lock up during tests. After I finished my SAT’s I felt REALLY good about them but when I got the scores back, it was a major disappointment. I plan on retaking them.

Also, if anyone could chance me on Chapman for Biology, that’d be cool.

UCI: 10% (Reach)
UCSD: 3% (No)
NYU: 1% (No)
UCSB: 10% (Reach)
UCD: 15% (Reach)
San Diego State: 40% (Low Reach)
San Louis: 20% (Reach)

I know your grades and scores are not that grade, but I think you have very good ECs and make sure you write great essays!

My SATII scores are
Bio: 600
English:490 (I have no idea what happened)
If anyone could chance me on Chapman University as well with the schools I stated in the fist post, that’d be great! I’ll try to chance back!

Hey, I’m Vietnamese too (mostly, haha). You guys should see this article: [At UCLA, who must pay price for white racism? Vietnamese-Americans – America’s Finest Blog – SignOnSanDiego.com](http://weblog.signonsandiego.com/weblogs/afb/archives/027135.html). Being Vietnamese isn’t exactly a “plus”.

UCD, UCI, UCSB - Reach
UCSD - No
NYC - No
SDSU - Match
California Polytechnic: San Luis Obispo - Reach
Chapman University - Reach

forensicanthro, if you can bring up your SAT score to ~1800, you’ll definitely improve your chances.

Thanks CupNoodles. Do you think a lot of community service and EC’s would help? UCI is my top school right now… I hear it’s hard to get into, but I also hear that it’s easy to get into.

I heard about the UCLA thing. What. A. Bummer.

It can’t hurt, but the UC’s are “stat obsessed”. Going to a CSU or a community college and transferring to Irvine is a very viable option. Anyways, your best bet is your essay.

Why not apply to UCSC? it has a nice high acceptance rate, and if you get your SATs up, you could get in

UCSC is too close, and at the same time, too far. It’d be a waste of time for me to drive 45 minutes. I might as well go to my local San Jose State. But UCSC is a fun place to be.

BUMP Anyone else?
ALSO: If anyone could list definite matches in CA, that’d be great!

Sorry for my late reply forensics. :</p>

Well… all the colleges must be reaches… (i know, i’m like you at the moment too. except, I’ve got 2 D’s on my transcript… eeeek!)

NYU: say, if you possess the hand of god, you’ll get in… :stuck_out_tongue:
all UC’s of the ones listed, UCSB may be your best chance. Don’t give up though mate, you still have this summer to strengthen your test taking skills.

cal poly san luis obispo: no idea. gotta look more into that college…

For those UC’s: they seem to care about the academic crap only (though a stellar essay and your EC’s will tip the balance to your favor…)

spend you summer time studyin for SAT’s/SAT II’s. maybe try the ACT?

Sorry if I seem to be a downer… but I want to encourage you for your best interests.

good luck. good skill. thanks for your reply in my thread.

LEMON

BUMP

Thanks lemon!

I got my AP score in (yeah, only 1) and I got a 2 on Biology. ■■■.
Does anyone know what ACT score would be safe for me and save me? I’m planning on taking my ACT’s in September or October and my SAT’s over again in October.

ALSO: can anyone list safe schools and chance for UCRiverside as well?

My senior year schedule is currently:
Trig/Precalc
Government/Econ
Physics Honors
AP English Lit/Comp 4
Photography 2 (I had enough “talent” to skip Photo1 if that counts)
Journalism (editor)
