My work experience comes from having to fill in for where my father ran away (and defaulted on child support payments). I was supposed to look after my brother after school, and work so I gave up many of my ECs. The numerous hardships I have faced economically and from abuse (from my father) are outlined very well in the essays I wrote. I come from a very disadvantaged background.

Through Questbridge, I am applying to:
Princeton, Yale, Emory and Stanford.

Normal Decision, I'm applying for:
Georgia Tech, UNC Chapel Hill, Duke, John Hopkins and Brown.

Chance me! Thanks.

National Honors Society doesn’t count as an EC, and I wouldn’t include any ECs that you did only in the 9th grade because it comes off as looking desperate for ECs. And band doesn’t count as an EC if you take it as a class. There’s no shame in not having a lot of ECs, but don’t try to make it look like you have more than you actually do. You have a legitimate reason for not having a ton, so don’t stress it.

And you need another SAT II.

Pep Band, Jazz Band, and Marching Band are all EC’s.

Wind Ensemble is not, but I would consider mentioning it in the Honors section.

Don’t include Pep Band though, you only did that for one year.

Ah, wups I forgot to mention that pep band was only offered during 9th grade. But it sounds like I shouldn’t list it anyway.

My remaining SAT IIs are going to be taken this coming up october, Literature and Math2. I plan on a 780 Lit, 800 math2 atm.

Wow those are excellent stats!

Where is the +7 coming from. I’m in Gwinnett Co and we get +10 for AP courses only, nothing for Honors. Kind of sounds like you live in a high income area though so in that respect your educational opportunities are not at a disadvantage- guessing Northview, Chat HS or Duluth?

What’s your ethnicity? That plays a big role in QuestBridge.

PYS is a reach, in large part because your ECs are rather weak. Good shot at the others.

Whoa, how’d you know I came from GA. I’m going to Northview right now, we get 7 bonus points for all honors classes.

My ethnicity is Vietnamese. My parents were both immigrants.

How much a reach is PYS? Since I’m applying through questbridge which gives me a better opportunity to show the whole me (and there is A LOT to it).
Would they be straight up denials?

thanks!

Calvin, you are taking dual enrollment at Georgia Perimeter, therefore in Georgia, lol! My D school is prob 5 miles from you! Northview has a great reputation for sending kids to top tier schools.

I think using questbridge will be a terrific way for you to get admitted, and that you have a much greater chance through this avenue than through “normal” admissions.

You have great stats!

H Mart tipped me off cause I love the frozen fruit creamy stuff but I haven’t been there in a couple years. I thought all GA publics had the same grading scale.

The only thing that I noticed is that you didn’t take AP World History, AP US History, AP Chemistry or AP Biology, AP Govt , lack of a 4th year of language which might not look challenging enough esp since your school offers them.

Northview is a super expensive area - well to me it is. It’s kind of hard to say not knowing the whole situation. But don’t think you need to spill here. I’m not QB but I would say you def make finalist. Did you say you were 1st generation?

yea, its REALLY expensive, but the schools around here are great. thats the reason for the jobs I took.

yes, I’m also first generation. The thing about my schedule is that it definitely lacks vigor, but I’ve tried to make up for that be excelling in the few subjects I do take (ap lang, ap physics). Hopefully my essays explain the reason why I couldn’t take the extra classes/EC’s.

I think you’re in everywhere honestly.

Big, I’d say. Your ECs lack a passion/focus, even though your scores are great. Don’t get me wrong, you have a shot, but you’re not quite as competitive as many of the other QuestBridge applicants.

While it’s generally true that the QuestBridge application allows for more room to show the “whole you,” it’s not quite so for Princeton, Stanford, and Yale, which all require that you submit the Common App even if you’re going through the Match program. Thus, they primarily consider the Common App, if not exclusively.

Note, also, that only 9% of those matched are Asian. Obviously, this puts you at a disadvantage, though your immigrant status will help some.

No. It’s still possible.

Don’t worry about it, I think you’ll be great. Did you work over the summer too? Any community service? Did you participate in the college prep QB junior year? Check out this group on facebook
