What do you think my chances are for admission at columbia? My essay will be great also…thanks - all feedback is appreciated

geeez i wish i'd have stats like that... i think your chances are fab. your grades and scores are more than enough, and it's good that your extra curriculars are more oriented towards the same subject because colleges, especially ones like columbia, like to see their applicants focus their activities based on their interests rather than have a long list of barely related activities. you've got high chances... good luck!

Hey, you sound a LOT like me. Jewish, active in Democratic politics/social activism, interested in philosophy, better at english than math, etc. It's as though I'm looking into a mirror!

Anyhow, I'd say you have a great shot, but you should really do your best to get that SAT Math score up. What's your UW GPA? I know that at some schools, 4.2 W would translate to a 3.6 UW, whereas at others, it's a 3.9 UW.

wmmk - haha, ya i guess you sound a lot like me (or i sound a lot like u for that matter)...i'm not really sure what my unweighted gpa is but i'm really happy my school doesn't rank - i go to an extremely competative private school so a lot of kids in my class do well in school...

Not sure how everyone is deducing that you have a very high chance of getting accepted because NOBODY has a high chance of landing a school like Columbia.

That said, your profile looks pretty generic; best of luck next year.

I really like the summer internships, esp the NAACP. Work the hell out of those, and if they're your passion, pursue it passionately.

Your SAT math is rather low. In and of itself it's not fatal, but someone of your background probably could use a better showing. I rarely recommend this but if some practice and study (and I mean "some") seems to yield much better scores on math, you may want to consider a retake. It's at least worth investigating.

Lastly, this is all assuming you're a HS junior, rather than a senior looking for an early eval on your already-submitted application.

Yngwie, how is this generic? I think this kid definitely stands out from the loads of kids who did MUN, debate, student government, FBLA, NHS, science fair, math team, etc. He admittedly has a couple of those activities, but the rest of his EC's are much more interesting.

adman921, I think I'll apply to Columbia (ED), Yale, Princeton, UPenn, Amherst, Georgetown, UChicago, NYU, UMichigan, UIllinois, and Trinity (CT). That said, I'm just a H.S. freshman now. I hope you don't mind being my "guinea pig"--if you get a pile of Ivy acceptances (or at least one from Columbia), I'll stick to my current path. So again, best of luck!
