My writing skills are well above par; I've been told that my essay is very good so I'm not too worried about that aspect of my resume. I'm getting recommendations from my Calc teacher and a teacher of mine who was a BU Trustee Scholar.
I'm hoping my successes in crew and relatively solid test scores can help shadow my GPA a bit... Although I'll have taken 10 APs and this GPA is unweighted... I have a quirky essay that I think will be memorable to most. Likely not to receive financial aid...

Why would you even apply to any school in the top 20 with a below 3.70 unweighted GPA? Your 3.69 unweighted GPA (found this in one of your old threads) is crap and will get you rejected by most schools in the top 40.

@Mangiafuoco stop going around and hating on everybody’s threads. This guy would probably get into Columbia if he can get the coach connections going. Private white Catholic HS in the Northeast will feed a lot of students into Ivies.

I think that you’d have to have even better scores to overshadow the GPA, or at least a very very fantastic extracurricular or hook. Unless you could get recruited athletically, I think it’s going to be a very low reach.

Ignore @Mangiafuoco … A 3.7 GPA is by no means crap. You have impressive stats but Columbia is ridiculously selective so it is a reach. Nonetheless, apply! Nothing to lose and who knows, anything can happen! Best of luck! :)

@mangiafuoco Bro you’re bitter because you didn’t get into your top schools with similar stats to myself… Get over yourself and hop off, I can easily get into a top 40 school

@JimtheBoy
I’m sure you could get into a top 40 school. I never said that a top 40 school was absolutely impossible for you. But a top 20 school is a different story.

Had a kid with a 3.5 UW GPA and 30 ACT get into U Chicago, though her essay and circumstances were a bit unique she got in also to University of Michigan but rejected from Duke. So you never know.

MODERATOR’S NOTE: As with all chances threads, the respondents are responding with their opinion. None of them are admissions officers, so all should be taken with a grain of salt.

Taking off my moderator hat, Columbia is a crapshoot for everybody. That said, a 3.69 at OP’s school places him just slightly outside the top 10%. That is why admissions looks at grades within the context of the individual school.
