@merc81@bouders , Thank you so much for taking your time into this. I hope you and your loved one’s are doing good! :))
I cannot afford more than $35K. I am planning to pursue Business Studies, International Relations and Minor in Econ probably. I am also kind of Undecided for schools that does not offer Business and IR. I also like to explore as well.
As of now, I have applied to 1)NYU for Gallatin
2)USC for Business Administration.
3)Northwestern as Undecided.
4)Vanderbilt as Undecided at College of arts and sciences and second option at Peabody College.
5)Drexel University for Business
6)Fordham for Business as well
7)Emory University for Business undecided.
8)Stevens Institute of Tech for Business as well.
I have applied to Vanderbilt, Emory and Stevens as my seniors with similar grade got in. Thats why i applied.
NYU is my dream school and I know its very expensive… But i applied because one of my friend’s friend being an international student got a full ride at NYU and I was shocked and surprised.
Fordham I got no idea.
Northwestern is Reach school.
Other than that I am planning to apply to Amherst college, Pepperdine University, The George Washington University.
Then I dont know if I shud even consider applying to four IVYs- Yale, Columbia, Dartmouth and Cornell. (still I am applying two anyways but I am not sure which two)
Also applying to Georgetown as well.
I want to study at a college that has good city life as well. Please suggest top reputed universities for me
Based on what you have written, you will want to research your options very thoroughly before arriving at a final list. I’ll offer a few thoughts that might help.
The majority of the Ivies do not offer business majors, so consider this in deciding where to apply.
Amherst is one of the most selective colleges in the U.S. and is not in a city. So don’t apply unless the school really interests you.
These resources can help you find quality economics programs:
Courses related to international relations often appear in government departments, so the existence of an IR major may not be essential in your search.
Look into whether enrollment at Gallatin would allow you to take courses in Stern.
For a private school notably strong in international studies, business and economics, look into the University of Richmond. UR provides need-based financial aid.
For a public university that might be within budget even without substantial financial aid, research University at Buffalo.
Couldn’t agree more.
Pepperdine is in Malibu. It has a religious affiliation and has religious requirements every semester. The school is not in LA. There are some suburban malls that you could drive too. You will need a car, since public transportation is not great.
@merc81 Yes, I can take courses from Stern and other schools when my accepting college is Gallatin.
I want to get into top schools and I want to be challenged with the course work. Being an international student, I like to have my chances at Universities such as Georgetown where they are need blind once the student gets admitted. With very strong Alumni mixers, having a urban campus and a city life. I want to consider universities that gives an holistic approach the most imperative factor while considering for an application.
The main reason why I want to go “Undecided” is because, I can go through whatever subjects I want and by the end of sophomore year, I get to decide what I actually want to learn.
Business and Econ is just an option I shall definitely consider, but undecided under college of arts and sciences or something similar to that sorts.
University of Richmond seems a very good university, but I would like to try for prestigious universities…
I want to have an amazing relationship with the city also by volunteering, handing 2-3 bottles of water to the police officers everyday and running for internship in the city itself. That is what I want and if that doesn’t workout then I want to go to the top 15 universities and want to challenge myself.
Regarding Pepperdine, I like fulfilling religious affiliations and my main factor for pepperdine is because of the location of the university, right in front of the beach.

It would be really helpful if I can gain insight into Prestigious universities that is really good with placements. I am not looking at public universities, rather private is what I opt.
In recommending UR, I was suggesting it as a potential reach school, actually. You might see how it compares to some of your potential choices in this analysis, which, though older (and based on an earlier calibration of the SAT exam), correlates roughly with selectivity: https://www.businessinsider.com/the-610-smartest-colleges-in-america-2015-9.
These represent examples of U.S. colleges with superb academics and career or graduate school placement: https://www.forbes.com/sites/nataliesportelli/2017/04/26/10-expensive-colleges-worth-every-penny-2017/. Only a few of these schools, however, offer the urban environment you seek, and all would be extremely difficult to get into. Nonetheless, this group matches your implied question. Just be sure you have asked the right question.
“ Yes, I can take courses from Stern and other schools when my accepting college is Gallatin.”
You can, but you should bear in mind that not all courses are available to other schools, and you will generally have lower priority in registration (for Stern this is usually a week after registration opens to Stern students) so you may find that courses you want are full or waitlisted.
The bigger problem may be getting enough aid from NYU even if you are admitted, as they explicitly do not meet full need. Internationals are also admitted on a need-aware basis.
@SJ2727 Yes, I need to complete the prerequisites before I can take classes at Stern. I dont know regarding Financial aid lets see :)/ Can you compare colleges such as NYU, GWU where the campus is urban and well reputed for business, econ or IR major. Also I may go in as a Undecided major.
I don’t think you understand about the universities in the US. Hearing a bunch of names and assuming things about the “prestigious” colleges isn’t going to help you. You need to research these universities online. Every college is very different from every other college.
NEED BLIND means that when they read your application, they don’t look at your request for financial aid. (That’s usually in another office). It doesn’t mean that later on, you’re going to get financial aid. It just means that they only look at your academic information when making a decision. They may accept you, but financial aid may give you zero funding. It happens a lot with international students. They get accepted but they aren’t given any funding, so a number of internationals can’t attend because they don’t have the money.
The universities in the US have to meet certain standards. From my experience, there are some very strong in-state public and private universities; it isn’t just a handful of colleges that are good and will challenge you. There are over 4000 colleges and universities. It sounds like you’re basing “challenge” according to an often repeated name or location.
You want to hand out water bottles to policeman? Do you think they all hang out together somewhere? I have lots of friends from high school that are/were officers in local police departments, or California Highway Patrol. In California, they patrol in cars. They are very busy during their shifts. Don’t assume that what you see on TV is what real life is like in the states.
Pepperdine is a small private college that happens to be on the beach. It happens to be very, very conservative. It is very expensive. You’re required to have 12 confirmed spiritual activities per semester. Being on the beach doesn’t mean you get full sun; California gets a lot of fog on the coast. You may not see sun all day. Malibu is not a flat topography and doesn’t really have a lot in the way of commerce. Lots of cliffs, private property and some poor access to the ocean. It’s meant to be reserved and residential.
NYU for business and GWU for politics/IR are both very competitive admissions, both are need aware (NYU for internationals, GWU for everyone), and neither meet full need. You can research further on the college pages about college scholarships, realizing they will be competitive and that while your resume looks impressive, so do many, many others they get. I am not trying to be harsh here, you just need to be realistic. By all means apply to these schools - you may get in and you may get good funding - but you really need to have a good back up plan for if you don’t. If the colleges that we would consider good backup are not prestigious enough for you (I’m not being sarcastic, I also come from a foreign country and know well how name recognition works at “home”) it may be better for you to go to a domestic college, do really well in undergrad, and then come to the US for postgrad. This is quite a normal route - If you look at the statistics, foreign students tend to be much better represented at postgrad than undergrad for the higher ranked colleges.
By the way, even if you can apply undecided, at least at these two you still have to apply to a particular school (for example you can apply undecided to NYU CAS, but that still puts you in CAS, as they admit by school not by major. If you apply undecided to Gallatin, I can almost guarantee you you will not get in. I can’t remember if you can apply undecided to GWU but again you have to apply to a particular school within GWU. Unless it’s changed, American is one where you apply to the college as a whole and not a particular school within it. American is suburban rather than urban, very good for IR, not so sure about business, does not have a great reputation for good aid.)
@SJ2727 I think you are confused… I am not going undecided at NYU and not applying to stern. I already applied to Gallatin and properly researched about the school and mentioned about my plans a doing entrepreneurship with legal studies. I was talking about going undecided in IVY such as Dartmouth. I had applied to NYU Shanghai 2 years back and got in with 60% scholarship. Its acceptance rate is only 3.8% and I did not apply to any colleges under NYU NYC campus, hence placed at Shanghai. This time I already applied to Gallatin.
With regards to my backups, I already got into Beloit College, Hult university both with full ride on tuition. Also got into Pace University, NYIT, St Johns University, University of Nebraska and Idaho as well. I got backups and deferred all to fall 2021. Since I got 6 safety schools, I want to apply to competitive one’s as well.
Plus I don’t think its a good option at all to come to the states for postgrad over undergrad, because we will go in debt worth at least $125,000. I thought I shall take my chances and see how it’s going to be.
@“aunt bea” Thank you for your opinion. I already received full ride on two safety schools. I just want to challenge myself with the top leading universities and thoroughly researched before writing the essay.
Regarding helping the police, what I meant is to volunteer and help if they need any. Many of my seniors at NYU does it so thats why I had put the info above earlier.
Which all in-state universities shall consider? I thought ill check with the UC’s but there wont be financial and probably minimal scholarship dept wise…
@Nithinng: Since you were accepted to several U.S. colleges last year, it seems you would have taken the SAT and submitted your results? If this is the case, then schools to which you apply this year may question your choice not to submit scores. In any case, your own knowledge of your SAT score will help in college selection. Some of the highly selective colleges mentioned in this thread commonly accept students with at least a 1450 SAT score, for example, and it would be best, if applying to these schools, that you match with these students.
