Hi I'm a rising sophomore in a private preparatory high school. I would like to know if I am a candidate for and Ivy League University. My father was born in Dominican Republic and moved to the U.S. at the age of 17 and graduated from Buffalo University(I'm saying this because I don't know if I'm a URM or not and if this will play to my advantage). I want to become an engineer and I have a bright future in mind for myself. My freshman year grades were far from stellar, but I want to know if I get straight A's throughout the rest of High School if I can attend an Ivy League University such as HPSM. I took all honors classes which was the most rigorous and advanced course a freshmen could take at my school. I was a varsity cross country and varsity track runner(I won a school athletic award for track), however I don't know if I would like to or would even be able to run in college. I have been placed in all honors and one AP class for my upcoming sophomore year, once again the most rigorous course a sophomore in my school could take. This upcoming year, I plan on joining more clubs as well as earning leadership roles in them, starting an engineering club(My school would be all for it, could I develop this into my hook?), becoming class administrator(not much if any other people who would run for it), and continue my community service outside of school, I had about 40 hours last year but plan on getting more. I have also begun studying for the SAT's and reviewing my coursework. Comments from any Ivy students or parents would be great. My grades and class placements are as followed:
Freshman Grades:
Honors English - 91
Honors Geography - 90
Honors Geometry - 87
Spanish 2 - 96
Honors Biology - 90
Music In Our Lives - 90
Sophomore Placement:
Honors English
AP Geography
Honors Trigonometry
Spanish 3
Honors Chemistry
Art Appreciation
Thanks for the help!

Without an ACT/SAT score it’s too early to ask for chances.

That said, if your high school uses Naviance, or some other college admissions tracking system, you should check to see how many kids have been accepted from your HS to Harvard with your GPA. If your HS doesn’t use Naviance, ask you guidance counselor, as they can provide you with school-specific information that will be more accurate that any advice you get on CC. When thinking about Harvard, I think notjoe recently said it best:

Gibby - Thank you for the advice! My high school does use Naviance and I will check ASAP. Do you have any more advice on how I can increase my chances of getting into a top school?
Thanks,

Thatguy- I hope you realize that the majority of top Engineering undergrad programs are not at Ivies.

How can you go to an Ivy League school when you don’t even know which schools are in the Ivy League? Stanford and MIT are NOT in the Ivy League.

PsychoDad10 -I know but I’d like to go to a school where I can still explore my options and other interests. Although I have great interest in engineering, it is possible that I may pursue another major or change my mind about engineering once I’m in college. I just want to keep my options open. Thank you.

FlyEagle17 - I know that they are not Ivy League schools, however they are Ivy-caliber.

Well, that’s a ridiculous question. I know I couldn’t name all eight Ivies when I applied. I don’t remember whether I learned the list before or after I moved into the Yard.

Or did you just want everybody to know that you knew more than some stranger?

Oh I legitimately thought you confused Stanford and MIT with the other Ivy League schools. My bad! Also, Sirkorksy, calm down dude. Chill. No need to start an argument.

It’s alright I meant to clarify that but I had to re-type it because I wasn’t signed in when I originally posted it.

Of course, you’re right. A person should never all over somebody else for his inopportune wording, or jump to the worst, most critical conclusion about another poster online.

Isn’t it funny how sometimes a person can’t see that?

I don’t know why your continuing to argue. I already stated that it was my bad that I thought the OP confused the schools.
