^Most probably the Asian kind. I say pretty good GPA, solid SATs and test scores, and rank. You have the stats qualify. But what distinguishes you form the other ones who have just as good stats as you? To get in to a school as competitive Penn, just could number won’t cut it. You really need to have outstanding EC’s to go a long with those stats. So I recommend doing some more EC’s that you are genuinely interested and in general just getting more involved in your community. Just studying behind a desk won’t contribute much to any sort of college, so try to get a couple of outstanding EC’s.

You won’t get in… Considering our class has 12 valedictorians (I’d say at least 8 will apply to Penn as their first choice), you have next to no shot. Then again, I’ve told you this in person, so just reiterating :P

i think you have an Excellent shot.
It really isnt all that competitive when 30% get EDed. 33% of apps are incompetent gets tossed out to the R pile. Of the remaining, you have an 50% chance of entering the class. Significantly lower for Wharton. 50% for SAS, higher for SEAS.
On the other hand if you dont get in ED your screwed.

… so are 23.3% of the freshmen class.
Asians on the whole have the BEST chance of going to good college.
How many asians are there in the US by percent? 4-6? 5%?
How many are in HYPSM + penn+ Columbia+ Duke+ Caltech?
Many times that 4-6%. All are in the 15%+.
Yes they will have to compete against other Asians but still more Asians find their way into good colleges than any other group by percent. (10-15% black in US but like 8% in HYPSM).

You’ve got pretty good chances, but you need to put a face on that application. Be sure to write a stellar application, get good teacher recs, and do some volunteer work or something to show that you are well-rounded.

Other than that, awesome SAT score, good GPA, I say you’ve got a low reach/match :)

Your first line of competition is always from your own classmates. If the above is true and several vals from your high school who have good scores apply, it will indeed be tough. I’m also assuming you’re from PA or NJ if this is the case which also makes it more difficult as you will encounter lots of competition from legacies and they need to accommodate staff kids and friends of the U without having half the class from those states.

How do the colleges, like ivy leagues etc, actually come up with their class? Do they actually have “quotas” from each state? And, colleges do look at class rank, if there is a class rank system, to differentiate applicants from the same school?

I just know that they have quotas from each state

and yes my class has like 12 valedictorians and most of them are probably just going to apply to all of the ivies (and might get accepted to all of them as well)
