math teacher wrote me an 850 word rec. it had good stuff explaining my role in math team as president, and the huge amount of commitment I put in preparing for MAO nationals, but the grammar is pretty bad and had a like 12 sentence paragraph ahah. should be pretty good though.

-Personal Essay kinda sucked. got mostly positive responses by the end, but i felt it was weak. 460 word essay.

-Very good interview. Went about an hour and had good convo. She e-mailed me later saying it went very well.

-Also I put two typos on my Columbia ED app, will this seriously hinder me??

Chance for:
-Columbia ED
-Stanford
-Duke
-Brown
-Amherst
-Williams
-Dartmouth

Thanks!!

Hmm you seem to have similar stats as me, as well as the fact that i’m korean too! haha
well here’s my subjective thought
-Columbia ED Low-reach
-Stanford reach
-Duke Match
-Brown Match
-Amherst reach
-Williams low-reach?
-Dartmouth match

i’m really not sure about those two liberal colleges up there but it seems like you got all the stuff that’s needed to get into an ivy, but maybe for regular decision colleges you can spend more time on essays, because at this level of competition the deciding factors would be the essays and a hint of teacher recs…

hope you get into columbia-good luck

o yeah and i forgot, chance me back :)

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/811257-chance-me-top-schools-plssss.html</a></p>

chanced back. bumpppp

bumpppppppp

I frankly dont think you have a great chance. Not an amazing rank, almost no sports (all geeky nerdy extracurrics, which everyone has, except for “c” team basketball…ughh), and “sucky” personal essays. There are other people out there with better resumes. That being said, I would still apply, because you are asian, and it seems that it is easier for us asians to get in!!!

thanks man. except i dont agree with “easier for us asians to get in”

Columbia ED Low-reach
-Stanford reach
-Duke Match/low reach
-Brown Match/low reach
-Amherst low reach
-Williams low-reach
-Dartmouth match

Essays really do matter! I didn’t like hearing you thought yours sucked! That’s one of the few things you can control. It also doesn’t help your asian…not tryin to be mean but its harder for you sometimes to get in the top schools if you can’t stick out in your essays. I wish you the best of luck though!!

Chance me please =)

Did you apply to Fu or Columbia College?

yeah same as tenor for life
i mean, asian hurts you, there are so many…but hopefully you stand out some how.
Good luck!!!

Hey chance me back…
Ivy league 2014/others?

You’re obviously a great student, and this is going to sound mean and racist and horrible, but Columbia, Amherst, and Stanford may shrug you off as “just another Asian math genius”. You stand a good chance at all the others. Best of luck :)

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/808196-i-want-candy-colleges-change-lives-schools.html</a></p>

Columbia ED: match (really good chance with ED)
-Stanford:match to low reach
-Duke: match
-Brown: match ish
-Amherst: match
-Williams: match ish
-Dartmouth: match ish

with all of these schools and your great stats, its really a toss up. One mind find some hook in your application that they love while another may not.

chance me back! http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/811378-chance-swarthmore.html</a></p>

Thanks and good luck!

bumppppppppppp i applied to columbia college itself
all chanced back btw =]

thanks for your opinions!

bumpppppppppppppp

i think if you dont apply for fin aid you stand a good chance at duke. chance me?

im from India and am applying to Dartmouth college ED for 2010.
I graduated from high school in June last year and my stats are as follows:

Took A level Bio, math, chem and physics for 11th and 12th and am an A student in all my classes.
got the school scholarship in my 12th year.
was class valedictorian (rank 1)
scored the highest marks in india for A level physics.
SAT 1 score: 2330 (760 reading, 770 math, 800 writing)
SAT2 : 2400 (physics, chemistry, math level 2)
studied English for 4 years, french for 3.

Extra curriculars:

  1. over hundred hours comm service at school teaching underpriviledged children.
2.over 200 hours in the past year volunteering at an NGO school teaching underpriviledged kids.
3.Was founder and President of School science and math club.
4.did a whole bunch of intramural sports at school, captained class cricket team, was a founder of school cricket team.
5.have been doing research at an institute for a while in the past year.
6.taught A level physics at my school for 2 months.
  2. play guitar and bongo drums.

essay is quite good I feel, and so are the teacher evaluations.

im also thinking of williams, amherst, caltech and cornell.
so waddya think?

I don’t know but maybe your class rank would hurt a bit? And I think the 720 on Bio is a little low for the schools you’re considering. Use score choice for the schools which require two Subject tests.Otherwise I think your app is pretty solid.

About essays, you never know how the other person sees it. I’m an international and hence I have no authority to speak on this (except for experience), but still an incident that might put it : I realized one day before Stanford EA deadline that I hated my app essay and I wanted to start all over. I thought what I managed to finish two hours before the deadline was horrible, but everybody else who read it were like ‘You really wrote this? It’s awesome’.

I still stand by my opinion that my essay sucks, but in the end it all comes down to the the point of view of the person on the other side of your app.

-Columbia ED - Decent chance
-Stanford - Match
-Duke - No idea
-Brown - somewhere between match and reach
-Amherst - No idea again
-Williams - low reach?
-Dartmouth - Match

Chance me?
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/807563-chance-international-student-applying-ivies-top-schools.html</a></p>

Stanford - low reach to match
Duke - IN
Brown - IN
Amherst - Low reach to good match
Dartmouth - match
Williams - match

Chance back plz http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/811666-uf-chances-will-chance-back.html</a></p>

It is tougher for Asians to get in, not easier. Having said that, you still have a strong applications. I would say Stanford will be very tough, but you have a fair shot at all the rest of them. (It is too bad that so many in power in today’s universities are hung-up on race.)

I think you have a pretty good chance at getting into Columbia. Brown, Duke, and Stanford are slight reaches, but I think you’ve got a pretty good shot. I don’t know much about Williams, so I don’t think I can give you an adequate response there…I think Dartmouth and Amherst are definitely matches though. Your resume is impressive! Good luck :)

Chance me back??
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/802006-what-my-chances-getting-into-unc.html</a></p>

Crimsonmist, you have absolutely amazing stats. Dartmouth cares about stats quite a lot, so I say that you are a shoo-in.
