I have a 3.986 GPA. I am 13 in a class of 179. I am very active in 9 clubs and i hope to be president of one and maybe editor of another. I will get at least a 30 on my ACT. I may take at least 3 AP classes. I received Magna Cum Laude on the National Latin Exam administered by the Junior Classical League two years in a row. I also will have at least 500 service hours by the end of my senior year.
I would love to get into UChicago's famous economics program. What are my chances

You have the credentials for admission, but you must understand that Chicago and most other schools look at more than just that in selecting students to fill their incoming classes. Do you have a chance? Yes. How likely is your admission? I'm not an admissions officer, I'm not reading your essays, I have no clue.

I will say that your participation in NINE clubs is highly, highly suspicious. How much time do you devote to each? Which ones are significant, and which ones are just there to get you into college? NOBODY I know at Chicago was involved with nine clubs. Two, three, four at most. Consider only mentioning the ones that are important to you on your college application... while I attended math club meetings (sometimes), was a representative of a club that never met, kinda helped out student government, and donated blood, these miniscule efforts didn't make it to my application because I wanted the admissions office to focus on the activities and awards that were important to me instead of giving them a list of every hiccup I ever made starting in sixth grade.

Thirdly, make sure that you want more than just econ at Chicago. Chicago is a terrific school with a terrific econ department, you're certainly right, but when you agree to go to Chicago, you're not only signing on to a top econ program, you're signing on to a Core Curriculum and a campus culture that makes some students excited and some students scared. Before you venture any further in considering Chicago, make sure it's the right school for you.

thanks for your great response!!! It's great some people on these discussion boards actually give great thought out replies. Thanks for the advice for the EC's. Also part of what made me like UChicago was its Core curriculum. I'm positive i would like it there.

Does anyone else care to reply?

Terrific-- I'm happy you've looked into the core and have thought about how you'd enjoy it.

If I were you, I would work on writing strong, thoughtful essays. Make sure that you're proud of them, that they directly or indirectly convey something about you as a student and you as a person, and that they get across why you'd be a good fit for the school.

thank you very much

well yeah u have a chance. It really all comes down to essays, always. GPA and essays are most important to them. Also, you do know it is a ton of work.

I just got back home to california from the 3 week intensive japanese course and it was really time consuming. Class was from 9-12 every day (which wasnt that much) but then i usually had 2 hrs of written homework, and a good 7+ hrs of studying on top of that.
I mean yu could definitely get by with less studying because i was pushing for an A...which i am pretty sure i had an A- until the stupid final which probably dropped me to a B. But yeah, if you want good grades, then good luck.
But definitely a great...no, Amazing school. Truly a great intellectual atmosphere.

You need a higher ACT score.

like what act score

bump bump bump

They hardly care at all about test scores. If you can write a good essay than you should be fine.

thanks alot

bump does any1 else think that i may have a chance

bump bump bump
