Chance me at UCLA

I am an out of state applicant from MA. I hear it is easier to gain admission now if you are out of state? My UC gpa (10th/11th grade) should be a 4.0 and my ACT is a 32. I did not submit AP's. Does UCLA just look at stats or do they actually care about EC's and the essays? I have great EC's, research experience, but not much community service (a little bit). Can you tell me what my chances are? And do they consider 9th grade grades? I visited campus, which normally helps at most schools but I feel like UCLA is big enough so they don't care if you visit or not

I’m not sure about the out of state preference. Your grades are one thing but I feel your EC’s and your essays are the main factors admissions look at. UCLA practice holistic admissions which means they’ll take everything into account not just solely your scores and grades. They’ll glance at your 9th grades but they really look at your 10th and 11th grades. I had the grades and GPA but not the test scores, and my EC’s were okay. The main thing why I feel I got in was the fact that in my essays, I connected my EC’s to my future goals and went from there. In other words, if you truly showed yourself in your essays and of course have the grades and test scores, which of curse you do then you should be fine. :-)

All UCs do not consider grades from 9th grade. It’s not factored into your UC gpa … not even a little bit. If you take all AP classes in 9th grade and get all A’s, they don’t count toward your UC gpa. If you get all C’s in 9th grade, they don’t count either. UCLA is more stats based than Berkeley, but both really do care about ECs and essays.
Unlike some of the privates, UCs do not track if you visit so it doesn’t matter if you do a campus visit.

I know a multitude of freshmen at UCLA who got in because of their extracurriculars and not their grades or scores. In other words, not only do they matter, but they matter a whole lot! Do not overlook them at all!! Sports, service, leadership especially! However, GPA does matter too, and so do ACT/SAT scores. I got a 2100 on the SAT and have a strong weighted GPA. I’ve done 300 service hours and 5 seasons worth of sports. Even with all of these, I doubt I’ll get in because I still don’t have enough ECs.

Ooh, and OOS does help a bunch. The odds double, in fact, for OOS prospective students.
