It is a reach for everyone OOS unless you are a legacy.

Your stats are great, but it is really hard to ‘chance’ you: OOS has a hard cap at 18%, including recruited athletes.

Taking a class at a local college is not an EC

remember for commonapp that you are only able to list 10 eccs. Your stats and ECs are impressive however chance me threads are very trivial since stats and good ecs alone won’t get you into a great school. essays are extremely important and with a good essay, you have a good shot at UNC or any other fantastic school.

I had thought that taking a competitive college course could be counted as a Ec. I could have been mistaken.

I think your chances are fine but on the other hand, cpr certification doesnt count as a EC

how much does UNC take legacy into considerations?

A lot. Legacy OOS admit rate is around 40 percent. OOS admit rate for a non legacy is 14 percent and that includes recruited athletes and institutional admits. Don’t think it has much or any impact in state.

Look at Section C7 of the Common Data Set for UNC-CH; it will show you how the university gives weight to various academic and non-academic factors that are considered in the admission decision. Sections C9-C11 of the CDS will give you some numbers for admitted students in the most recent first-year class (they prefer not to use “freshman” at Carolina), although they don’t break these out into in-state and OOS students.

You are correct on all counts.

Here are some additional numbers, from the UNC-CH website, The Class of 2023 - UNC General Alumni Association (the last pre-Covid year for admissions):

Total number of applicants for undergraduate admission: 44,859

Total number of out-of-state students applying for undergraduate admission: 31,369

Percentage of undergraduate applicants from out of state: 69.9%

When you consider that 70% of the applicants for undergraduate admission to UNC-CH are seeking to fill 18% of the total allowable (without penalty) number of available places, you can appreciate that, statistically speaking, the chances of an out of state applicant are not very good. If an OOS applicant has one or both parents who are Carolina alums, then those chances get better.

If you are Valedictorian with an SAT in the 1500+ range, that would help your OOS chances. Otherwise, it is extremely difficult as others have said. But you can’t get in if you don’t apply!

Absolutely.
