I will most likely be a National Merit Finalist in the fall

*i know that my EC's are a little weak, but thats b/c im so focused on basketball. my school is really good in bball. this year we had one player going to ASU, another Army, we were in state championship last year, and U of A comes to our open gyms to scout us. unfortunately, im not sure if colleges will know how good my HS team is and i dont think many people know how much a commitment basketball is (countless hours shooting, lifting, conditioning, playing, etc). any ideas on how to improve my EC's? Thanks for your input!

how much scholarship money would i be looking at from UNC? is it possible for me to get a full ride or close to it with my stats?

You're in. Don't worry about it.

...it always confuses me when people with near perfect scores post their stats and ask if they have a chance. lol im pretty sure you're in =]

the fact that you just asked if you would receive a full-ride from Carolina implies you know you'll get in...

As I tell everyone with solid ECs and grades, take time and write an excellent essay and get great teacher recommendations. Assume nothing. Apply for the Robertson or the Morehead and have your counselor speak about your interest in UNC's Honors program.

Also, it is important to demonstrate why you feel UNC is the place for you and that you know something about what they have to offer. You posted this identical post in at least 10 forums of highly selective schools and only included UNC after someone suggested you do so. You'll need to get a little more familiar with the school and make this come across in your application. Only approximately 700 students are accepted from oos every year, so it's important to get it right...and not make any assumptions.

lol is there a point in asking, or can we consider this bragging?

imo, ur in lol...not really goin out on a limb with that one..

Again, I'd like to reiterate that no OOS applicant is a shoo-in. Your stats are solid but your Extracurriculars are a weakness, although they are not terrible or anything to be ashamed of.

pshhh.
you are in. If you aren't i would be very surprised.
being in does not mean $$$.
They don't seem to offer the world like other schools for national merit.
just dont' get upset if you get in but not honors and no merit aid.

well i mean i guess it comes down to if you are even serious about unc because after checking ur previous posts i see you've posted this on loads of other forums..

yes i have posted my resume on several college forums, but thats because ive just began my college search. im trying to see what each college has to offer in terms of education, and whether it would be affordable. as of now, im esp trying to find out which schools offer good MERIT based aid b/c my family makes too much money for need based aid.

ARCLAx when you ask if im serious about UNC, the answer is i have not gathered enough information about UNC to be "serious" about going there. is it a college that im interested in, yes it is

well i hope you like what you find out, unc is a great school

best of luck ;)

I hate it when people expect to have money thrown at them. It's just a tad obnoxious, lol.

i was beginning to think i was the only one lol.... ;)

me too.....

Haha...don't worry...you are in.

I don't know how in the world I got in. The only thing I can think of is my awesome essays, or because I'm awesome. My high score on the math section of the SAT was 480 :) and I made 2 C's in math throughout high school.

You're in, but not with a full ride. They also give a lot more money to in-state kids on merit. You could expect 2500-7500/year MAYBE I'd say if you worked it right.

yeah dont expect unc to give you much merit money since you're out of state. just because unc is a state school does not mean they hand out money left and right. the only way you'll get a full ride or half is if you get one of those major scholarships like carolina scholar, pogue, etc. and trust me, everyone who is considered for those scholarships have the same stats as you do

I realized I never addressed your ECs too much -

Your ECs really are not bad. A big commitment to basketball is nothing to frown at. Now, this might hurt you because it's not as community service oriented but I really don't think that matters except for scholarships like the Robertson. If I were you I'd think of applying for the Morehead. It focuses on academics as well as athletics and it sounds like you'd be a good fit.

Don't feel bad because you asked about money. This is a college help community and I'm not sure where else you'd ask about that. Again, my opinion is that any OOS kid should feel lucky just getting in, as I feel you should, but I'm not sure how much money I would expect if I were you. Most OOS students have very strong overall profiles (which is not to say that their statistics are anything to sneeze at), so I'm not sure what really sets you apart as an OOS candidate for money. So do not expect your profile to float you into some money.

For the third time, it's the essays. The essays, the essays, the essays.
