Chance me at Wesleyan please?

Hi all.
I'm an Indian Student planning on applying ED-2 to Oberlin and Wesleyan as they seem the best fit for me. I've been interested in a variety of things like writing, journalism, advertising, film making, debating and soccer. I was just wondering if any of you could take the time to chance me at Oberlin. I'm also wondering if it's worth applying to Wesleyan ED.Thanks.

High School Grades - 72%. I lost my father to a heart attack the day before I wrote my final (Board) exams, and this really is the weakest and most worrying part of my application. I'm really worried with regard to my board grades, and whether a school such as Oberlin or Wesleyan would overlook this. I Took the hardest subjects that my school had to offer i.e Math, Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science.

SAT - Writing - 760 CR - 740 Math - 770 Total - 2270
SAT II - U.S History - 750 Literature - 760
I'm also planning on taking the World History subject test.
National Exams - CLAT (Common Law Admission Test) All India Rank 1675 out of approximately 35,000 test takers.
2nd time CLAT - All India 402.

I'm also pretty confident of being able to write a strong and compelling essay. WIll get great recommendations from Principal (Counselor) and my class teacher.

ECs - Soccer - Over six years experience, Played at state level. Played semi professional league for State Bank of India.
Attended nation level training camp program, School team captain for two years.
MUN - Attended a few MUNs, most notable achievement being delegate of USA at the UNHRC at my school's MUN.
Been really involved in debate club at school, including attending a few parliamentary debates.
Writing - Written for school journal for two years, contributed lots of articles. I've written a series of short stories that
I will be sending in as part of the art supplement. Yet to be published.

I've worked at the office of a reknowed artist, and helped promote his art and work on social media for just about 6 months.

I've also been loosely invovled in some semi-professional gaming tournaments, placing 3rd and 5th respectively on online tournaments. I have a channel on which I stream my games, and have about 500 followers.

Volunteeering Activities - Volunteered at my school's cultural fest for 2 years in a row.

Worked at the local hospital for over a year.
Hosted and organized a donation camp for flood relief victims.
Taught basic English and Math to watchmen and security guards.
Taken part in lot of soccer tournaments to raise money for charity, and also spent around 2-3 months coaching younger children for free.

Another thing that I'm really worried about is that I enrolled at Loyola College, Chennai, ranked as the 3rd best university in India, and dropped out because I found it to be intellectually numbing. This, in part, is what led me to discover liberal arts and the freedom to choose what I want to study, and in particular, the structure at Oberlin.

Please be honest and let me know what you think!
Thanks.

Terrible about your father. The world becomes a different place when our parents leave it. I don’t know that even an admissions officer could offer you more than “toss up” in terms of your chances. Slay your essay!

Hi krishnawars (Mahābhārata?), sorry you haven’t received more responses.Have you posted on other boards?

My name happens to be Krishna, like the Indian god lol. I haven’t posted on other boards except the CC Oberlin forum, to which there’s been a decent response. Could you please elaborate on what toss-up means? Also, how do you think my chances are at Oberlin, Tufts, Macalester, Brandeis and Haverford?

Toss-up means it could go either way. I have no expertise about the admissions process. A very strong essay might tip the scales a bit. In terms of relative admissions difficulty I’m guessing it’s something like (in descending order of selectivity): Haverford > Tufts/Wesleyan > Oberlin/Brandeis > Macalester. Sorry I have so little to offer.

Google is your friend, @wesleyan97. Wesleyan and Haverford were virtually tied in terms of admissions rate last year. http://www.haverford.edu/admission/applying/class_of_2018_profile.php</a></p>

In any case, I’m applying ED to Oberlin. I really hope to go there. What do you guys think of my chanes? Also, could you recommend some other places that I should check out?

I offered my advice on the Oberlin thread. I think you have to be careful with any college that is need-aware for international students; you’re competing not just for a seat in the freshman class, but also for grant money, most of which is going to go to domestic students.

Schools generally considered similar to Wesleyan but, somewhat easier to get into include, Connecticut College, Bates (ME), Macalester ( MN), Grinnell (IA), Occidental (CA), Whitman (WA), Skidmore (NY) and several of the Seven Sisters colleges.

Tufts is more selective than Haverford and Wesleyan, and it offers EDII. Though it is need-aware, I believe.

What do you guys think of my chances at Macalester, Brandeis and Grinnell RD?

Nah, none of the above!

@Englishman‌ what do you mean?

I think you have the ability to be accepted to those colleges :- Macalester, Brandies or Grinnell all good colleges, but I think Wes seems like it could be a better fit, those colleges are easier admits, less rigourous perhaps and not as well ‘known’ as Wes, nothing against them, go for Wes.

I’ll surely apply to Wes RD. But I think my need for aid seriously disadvantages my chances of getting accepted at Wesleyan. Do you think I should apply ED, given stats? Is it worth using my ED shot at Wes? I can only apply ED-II , because it will take time for my recs to be ready.

I think Wesleyan will likely admit, since it’s SAT optional this cycle, but you might be better off going RD since you need aid and this will allow you to evaluate several offers and consider taking the best one, ED1 will not and you will be obligated (although cost is the only way to back out of an ED college acceptance). I think ED at Wes you would likely be admitted, as you would also in RD, but RD will allow you to consider offers from those other colleges, which is probably a more financially savvy way of doing it. Wesleyan do offer good financial aid but NOT full need for Intl students, I think you are in a bit of a quandary here. I would suggest RD is better for you.

Not true. Wesleyan is need-aware, but that only means, it may be more selective for students with high-need. Once you are accepted, however, you are not treated any differently than any other student on financial aid: 100%of need will be met.

We may have to agree to disagree here @circuitrider.

But having just gone through the aid process for Wesleyan, the way I am interpreting this and from having used the calculator and having an aid offer in my hand is this, as the site says, aid is very limited and to the best of my interpretations what we were told was that they often divy aid amongst Intl applicants, even before students are considered for admission, we were given the impression that the offer/need was considered BEFORE the application was finally determined admit or not admit, thus we interpret as NOT fully need, indeed the admissions officer advised we not expect full need to be met, which when we got the offer, it was NOT.

So @circuitrider may know different, but 6 months ago for Class of 2018 that’s what it was!

I’m less worried about the need, than getting accepted. My family can contribute around 15k dollars, so hopefully I get accepted! thank you guys for your help. Would love some more opinions! Also, is the sports scene really big at wesleyan, as compared to say middlebury?

Unfortunately, Englishman does not have a lot of credibility on this forum. After all, which version of the truth are you going to believe, what he says, today, or, what he said, two weeks ago?

<a href=“Do I have a shot? - #28 by Englishman - Wesleyan University - College Confidential Forums”>Do I have a shot? - #28 by Englishman - Wesleyan University - College Confidential Forums;

I’m quite confident that if admitted, 100% aid will be provided if needed. However, it’s the getting admitted part i’m really terrified about. :P
