Chance me at Yale Please! will only take a few moments!!!!!

i am considered a minority since my parents and i are from hungary, i have a dual citizenship.

i am currently a high school junior.... i have a 4.0 GPA

my classes this year:

AP US history
Honors Pre- Calc
English - american lit ( regular, it's my second language)
French IV
Photo II
and Physics ( not very impressive i know, but i have A's in all of my classes )

classes for next year: Senior year:

AP Government and Politics
AP Calculus AB
AP Photography ( 2 - D design)
French V
Some english elective ( not sure yet)

I've been part of Community Service board and Environmental club for all 4 years of my high school career.

i have over 1,000 community service hours alone just from working in Hungary during the summer to help out children in need. ( i sincerely hope this will be a big thing for me!)

my GPA thus far for H.S. is a 93% but with my grades this year i think it will improve to a 95% or so ( hope this is another benefit)

I played american football my freshman year until my Labrum in my shoulder tore and then i played soccer for two years until i got my ankle injured ( varsity football and then just JV soccer, but i was a captain) '

I plan to take 2 SAT II's - US history and Math I

I've taken the ACT once and i got a 27, but that was without studying at all. i plan to beef it up to a 33 or 34 ( i'm retaking it again in a few months) and actually study this time

Hm, i am a part of the national honor society at my school, i've won an award for community service, two awards for math as well and another book that was dedicated to me ( by a university)

I know that this was alot to look through, but please let me know what my chances for Yale University are... it is my dream school and i would love to get in!

Thank you and God Bless everyone

i realize that i probably don’t have much of a chance, but i think that i will have some stellar reccommandations from teacehrs as well as a killer essay… considerign all of that, is this possible for me? I just want ot make my family proud, coming from hungary, they’ve struggled very much and i would like to show them that i can make it to a top college

To be honest, I think you need to do a little more. Consider taking a tougher course because your classes are not as difficult. It’s good that you have a 4.0 but it also matters what type of classes you took to get that GPA. Take a major AP Science or Calc BC and an AP Hist. The ACT must be raised to around 33 or 34 like you plan to do. I am also a foreigner and have lived in the United States for only 8 years but I still took honors and AP English classes so you might want to consider that also.

Volunteering is good but nowadays everybody is doing it so you need more to make yourself stand out. Try entering more competitions and winning more awards or doing an internship. Also, a lot of people are in NHS so it doesn’t really mean much.

Do well on the SAT II and you might want to consider taking the SAT.
I’m assuming you’ll take all the AP Tests and work to get 5’s.

Hm okay

 1. You won’t be considered a minority if you are Hungarian. You might have an interesting essay topic- but thats as far as it goes. In other words, you will not have affirmative action working for you.

2) Not to be pessimistic, but bumping your score from a 27 to a 34 (even if you took the test without studying) is a HUGE stretch. I’m not saying it is impossible, but it is highly unlikely. :/

3) I don’t think they’ll care about a book being dedicated to you, seeing as you didn’t write it yourself.

I say chances are pretty slim.

i see, and the whole book thing is just at my school they have like universities “give” you a book idk it’s like an honor or something…

the 27 i got was without my calculator ( apparently it was considered illegal for ACT so i didnt use it) and with ZERO studying

i can’t take calc BC since the way it works at my school you have to do AB before BC and im in honors pre- calc

yeah i will work to get 5’s on the AP tests.

Also, in hungary i set up a musical competition for kids by a famous hungarian composer… this past summer and i have worked with some debate teams there that are known world wide.

In addition, does it make a differnce that i am at a difficult private school? or not so much

Oh okay, I didn’t understand what the book thing was. But if it’s an award/honor then you could put it on your application.

With the ACT, in my opinion, it’s very hard to jump so many points. It’s really different than the SAT.

All I’m saying is that it’s highly unlikely. But hey, prove me wrong- I’d be happy for you.

EDIT: yes, the rigor of your school will come into play when they read your application/transcript. It will help, because that would mean that a “B” at your school isn’t the same as a “B” at a less-rigorous school. But also beware that there are probably many schools better than yours as well so don’t assume that you’re in on the get-go. And all schools want to see that you’ve made the best you could with what you’ve been offered at your school, no matter the vigor.

thank you, i appreciate that. i hear you about the ACT, i just figure if i had never taken it before, i didn’t have my calculator, and never studied… that’s not bad… i ahve about 12 weeks til the next one… so i’m going to study my tail off and we’ll see wehre it takes me…

i’m just trying to prove myself to everyone and to make my family proud since they have come from a poor background.

thank you for looking at my credentials, i wish you the best of luck with your college situation!

thanks, you too!!! :)

You can use your calculator on the ACT. O_o

Seconding the “Not a minority” thing. Europe doesn’t exactly count. Hell, the middle east does not count.

haha iknow i can use the calc… i just had the ti - 89 and apparently that isn’t allowed ( i’ve used it for every test up to this point) and they said i couldn’t use it or i would get a zero… so i had no calculator…

and that was purely my call taht i was so ignorant not to look at the directions

I don’t think Eastern Europeans would be considered an “under-represented minority” for US college admissions. That status is reserved for Asian/Latino(a)/African-American/Native American/a few pacific islanders. Yale is a huge reach, as it is for most people.

ugh, it’s just that if i dont get admitted to a top college like Yale… my God mother won’t pay for my tuition… so i just want to make them proud. english is my second language and i’m working my tail off. is there any advice that anyone on the forums can give me that might help me out a little bit, things i can do to raise my chances?

also, i think i will take AP english for senior year ( hopefully taht will help!)

i’m hoping that with 5 AP courses total… and great grades in all of them, that it will help my chances? AP english senior year, having english as my second language… not necessarily a bad thing?

You seem like a really good dude – your Godmother should be proud. There are a lot of really good schools out there. Don’t get fixated on any one, especially Yale.

Hungarian is interesting, but not a minority for College Admissions purposes.

Get th ACT up to 35 and you will have a 25% +/- shot. (assuming great essays, and teacher recs.)

It’s a huge reach, but don’t be stuck on Yale just because of it’s prestige. There are many good top tier schools in the U.S. that all provide wonderful opportunities; search around and you may find one that interests you.

I don’t think that Yale is going to happen.
Your course load and EC’s are simply nowhere close to Yale standard

However, you are a solid candidate for many great universities in the country

I do think you have a chance, considering u r a junior. dont just “study ur tail off”, not enough. do something!
your ec’s so far look okay. if your awareness of your homeland os essnetial to you, make it clear by doing more, showing everything and make damn sure you will talk about it

it’s great to see u having english as a second language, because 1)you must have known another 2)you probably put more effort in for the same English mark, and generally everything.
though idk if adcoms are as sensible as i am…i know they have a 3) You have to take TOEFL if you are applying to Yale. sorry man…

as nice as i am i can make a list for you:
1)take that bloody, stutupid TOEFL, raise ur score in ACT/take the SAT and subjects
2)Do more hungarian-related EC’s;
something to do with poverty awareness will be good too. (if will help if you have achieved some prominence in Hungary, but dont do things for fame)
3) be confident
see yale should need less than what you should ask from yourself

i see, thank you for taking the time to help me out… does it matter at all that i got injured in my sports so i’ve devoted my time to community service? i even volunteer at the local like “Woods” places where they have wildlife and such… so that’s here in the US?

so raise my scores up big time… hm i see. do some more EC’s evne thoug h ican’t do sports since i got injured pretty badly in football with my shoulder!! and then lucky me, my ankle in soccer!

=/

p.s. im taking AP language next year ( i got recommended!) big step for me! since it’s my second language!

let me know, thank you so much guys!

p.s.s. i love Photography and i’ve been taking that for 3 years… does that count as an EC?
