Hey, I'm a Junior w/ a pretty average repertoire as an Asian male. Hoping to get into either Stanford and/or Columbia for a reach/dream school, and possibly Northeastern or the like as maybe a fit-school (?). Hoping to major in Chemical Engineering, but I'm still pretty flexible. Thanks in advance!!

SAT 2170 (CR 650, M 760, W 760)
(SAT IIs soon, as well as an SAT I retake)

GPA - 3.89 UW (our school's unweighted scale is a bit weird though because it lists 3.85 as an A... yeah I don't know) and 3.965 W (following the same scale from before)

APs - U.S. History: 5

Junior Year
AP Chemistry
AP Calculus BC
(Yes, I lament taking only two, but I felt unready to take AP Language, and AP World History was full... :()
The rest are honors classes.

Senior Year
AP Physics B (C isn't offered)
AP Comp Sci
AP Language & Comp
AP Italian (yay to having AP Test next year!)

As for ECs, I think I have an average - decent list.
National Honor Society Treasurer, 2 years in Key Club, 4 years in Swim Team (Captain Senior Year), 4 years Marching Band (section leader next year), Various mathematic tutoring classes and swim teaching, created a mural with a partner in our city that promoted diversity in our city.

Also planning to apply to the National Grid Engineering Program over the summer, as well as volunteering opportunities.

Any recommendations would also be greatly appreciated!!

I don’t know too much, but you sorta do seem like an average asian male. I’m an asian male too- but I think your ec’s are a little weak for stanford or maybe even columbia. The fact that you haven’t taken SAT II’s yet are going to hurt you too- you should try to take at least 3.

Unfortunately I dont think you will get into Stanford or Columbia. Despite pretty solid stats, it doesn’t look like you took the most rigorous courseload offered at your school from what it sounds like (correct me if I am wrong), your scores are not superb, and while your ECs are pretty good and varied, they don’t stand out so much.
At Columbia and Stanford the competition is freaking insane, but I wouldn’t completely count you out.

Northeastern is a saftey for you not a fit. Do you mean NorthWestern?

I agree with what you’re saying burnty. I didn’t necessarily take the most rigorous courses (not like Calculus BC isn’t rigorous psh…) like AP English Language but I’m definitely taking it next year, as well as Physics B and all that good stuff. Better late then never they always say… And as for EC’s, it’s unfortunate I live in a relatively poor city, where there aren’t many opportunities that many “wealther” cities have. But I try to make the most of it.

And no, I mean Northeastern haha. How would I match with NW?

Stanford, NW and Columbia will be tougher. Excellent chances at Northeastern. Some others to possibly check into are RPI (NY), Illinois, Michigan, Rose Hulman (IN), Georgia Tech, Case Western (OH), Lehigh ¶, Washington and WPI (MA). Best of luck!
