Chance Me Average Student for SBU

I'm pretty sure I'm on the bottom of the "food chain" here in terms of stats, somehow CC attract many competitive students, but then again if they weren't competitive they wouldn't be here looking for help and info. Anyway comparing to my school I do pretty well, but my school is below average, and I'm average compared to my friends from other schools. I'm quite worried to see how my future will unfold.

GPA: 89.97 Overall (Fresh-Junior)
I still haven't figured out what's unweighted or weighted nor how this would be converted in NYC to out of 4.0 GPA. Pretty sad. =[
Rank: 18 out of 400-500 Students

SAT:
CR - 590
Math - 670
WRT - 540

I've taken the SAT a second time, but significantly dropped. Will this greatly affect my applications? =</p>

AP Classes: (Haven't taken exam)
AP Bio
AP Calculus AB

Not planning to take SAT 2's.

Other:
No official club/organization nor volunteer work. I've wasted my time writing online reviews, playing games, friends, reading Wikipedia on various subjects for no reason at all and just taking care of my younger family members. I do enjoy most sports. I'm also a moderate graphic artist (Photoshop/ImageReady, etc). I'm also drug-free and highly against smoking and dislike/if possible never touch alcohol in the future.

I'm a first generation Asian-American (Chinese) Parents were immigrants but have passed the citizenship test and no one in my family ever been to college. (Excluding distant relatives who my of.)

What are my chances for SBU? Are there any colleges that fellow members here would recommend I also look up on? Similar colleges? I prefer that they are close to the tri-state area.

It seems my only chance is to have a splendid essay, I do not know what the topic is but I've become very ambitious recently, I want to change, make a difference and succeed. I also have a kind personality, and often teach my fellow classmates or help others in what I can. How can I show this in an essay?

Thanks for your time CC!

The University will take your three highest SAT scores for purposes of consideration for admission.

I think you should apply. Your SAT scores and lack of extracurricular activities will certainly hurt your standing in the general applicant pool; however, your GPA/rank isn’t significantly below Stony Brook’s median, which is 88-94.

The fact that you significantly dropped in terms of SAT scores the second time around is unusual. Did you study?

The first test was in my junior year towards the end of the school year so I had more free time to review. I never got into the habit of studying at all previously. The next SAT I took was also near the beginning of this school year, my senior year in which I have many work from AP Bio, projects, and other tasks along with my SAT. I kind of blew up being hit by so many things at once. I actually wanted a different date too but spots were filled up so quickly. =[

On the other hand my “failure” has taught me to not procrastinate, and begin to work for what I want. I used to be the type of student that just got things without trying.

A - 90-100
B - 80-89
C - 70-79
D - 60-69
F - 0-59

A = 4 points (honors weighted = 4.5, AP = 5
B = 3 points (honors weighted = 3.5, AP = 4
C = 2 points (honors weighted = 2.5, AP = 3

I see. What you don’t want to do is explain in your application personal statement how you are now motivated to do more work and succeed. The University receives thousands of students who say the same things.

Yes I know, probably everyone wants to write a heroic story on how they dealt with adversary. That’s why I’m trying to find a way to blast them away.

Many thanks at James1G, time to start converting. Would gym also count? It says on my transcript that it doesn’t. Sadly, I don’t know if it’s a blessing or a curse, all my AP is this year, I’m doing really well in Calc, would of been a significant boost. =[

EDIT: I have 151pts out of 164, if you divide it, gives me a 92%, now what.

EDIT2: Nevermind I got it. 154 total pts over 41 classes giving me 3.75 gpa unweighted.

Using the averages of 7 different type of classes my GPA is a 3.42 X_X I ended up with 24pts/7classes

Question: Should I begin studying now and apply for Dec SAT in hope of a better score and send it then?

Bump? Anymore comments? D:
