Chance Me! Barnard 2025 (current junior)

Hi all,
I know no one can answer this question except for admissions officers, but I’d really love your opinion on whether or not I’m on track to get into Barnard. Every year my school sends a few girls to Barnard, and I can totally see myself in them.

    -Private tutor

Background:
Ethnicity: southeast Asian/East Asian
From California
Hardships–live with a single mother, a sibling with acute sickness, father laid off and moved back to home country (Asia) for work
Middle class
School type: rigorous private school (90 students/class, top 10 national ranking)
Will apply for financial aid
No legacy
first-generation American (idk if that matters)
Gender: female

The only thing I think will really undersell me are my freshman grades. Transitioning from a large public middle school to a competitive private school really hit me hard (two B+'s both semesters of 9th grade), but my upwards GPA trend is incredibly steep, and I finished sophomore year with straight A’s. My course load is relatively rigorous and I take community classes on top of my internships every summer. Thank you so much for reading!!

My D20 just got into Barnard ED. It’s a fantastic school. Your stats seem to be in line with many admitted students and your ECs seem good as well. I would spend a lot of time on your essays. At the info sessions they said to submit good essays that are well-written and show that you’ve done your research and include very specific details about why you and Barnard are a great match.

If you can apply ED (make sure you can afford it) and it’s your top choice, I think that is your best shot. Good luck!

Congrats to your daughter! I’m planning on visiting campus in February to possibly get better insight for my essays. I’m pretty confident for my common app essay, but I’m not sure how not to sound “basic” for my “which woman” supplement. Thank you so much for your advice

your stats/ecs look AWESOME for any school and i think you have an interesting story to tell. don’t worry too much about a couple grades that aren’t a’s. i think you have a really good chance, especially being first generation american and achieving so much. i have a single mom too and really highlighted that in my personal statement, and it worked out for me! what i think might hurt you is being asian, from california (a LOT of people apply to barnard from there), and going to a super competitive school so make sure to show in your essays that barnard and you are a match made in heaven. if you need someone to look over them, i’d be happy to!

Your stats are very good, and I think you have a decent shot of getting in especially if you apply ED. I just got in ED with a 1290 and a 27 and I had 4 B’s on my transcript, so it was totally unexpected. The only disadvantage you have is that you live in California which is a competitive state for any school, but especially Barnard. I think that if you put a lot of thought into your essays and continue to excel in extracurriculars then you are definitely well on your way

@sasha2020 Congratulations on getting into Barnard! ?

I’m a Junior and would love to go to Barnard! My only “problem” is standardized tests as I am nowhere near a “30+” on the ACT (I took my first ACT December). I was wondering if you are participating in HEOP/BOP as I have looked over Barnard’s Website so many times and have not found information relating to eligibility requirements besides a 24 on the English section of the ACT. I live in a disadvantaged neighborhood in South Florida and was wondering if you knew anything about BOP as feel like participating in it would be my only chance of admittance as my scores will be lower than other applicants. (I plan to apply ED)

I apologize as this may be random coming from this thread!
