Sophomore year I was suspended due to drug issues. Strictly a school issue, clean legal record. It was around the same time where a close family friend committed suicide, as well as the increased stress from starting the IB diploma. Principal sympathized with me, can help write a letter explaining. Joined teens against tobacco use to help keep others from falling into the same pitfall.

I'll be sending applications to:
Harvard
Yale (EA)
Princeton
Stanford
UPenn
John Hopkins
Amherst
Williams
UC Berkeley
U of Chicago
University of Washington

I know the suspension will be a BIG problem with my application, but what are the possibilities of acceptance given my entire picture? I'd rather you be too harsh than get my hopes up. Thank you!

Brutal? OK. HYPS are highly, highly unlikely. Even without the suspension, unless you are top 2 in your class and write an unusual application, they would have been very tough.

After that it’s hard to say, you would be a fair candidate for Penn and the top LACs, but how you handle the suspension will make or break those applications.

Your ECs absolutely blow mine out of the water (but mine are kind of abysmal), but the suspension is going to hurt. The top tier schools may not be within reach, but I think you could still easily end up at a reasonably good college. This is a complete conjecture though.
Good luck!

HYPS- reach
Others- good shot

use lower ivies as your reaches and schools under that as targets :). Great EC’s, eagle scout never hurts lol.

By lower ivies I’m assuming Cornell and Dartmouth?

cornell + brown.

in at UW :)

Based on the above advice, you will not get useful help here. This is a situation to discuss with your college counselor, who is hopefully very good. Top colleges will not treat this lightly and I’m telling you this as someone who worked in admissions at one. One hint, the last thing you want to suggest to a college is that this was caused by academic stress.

Another long time poster, MomofWildChild, would probably have some sage advice. She has knowledge of students who have had similar suspensions and ended up at top schools. Like hmom5 has already pointed out, this situation needs to be handled properly.

Thank you for pointing me in the right direction, I’ll be sure to send her a PM.

bumpppppppppppppppp!

bumppppppppppppppp

wow what happened to winning stuff? And when I say winning stuff, I mean big stuff.

wait by drugs do you mean tobacco? how did you get suspended for that?

edit-
