Chance me for:

Harvard
Yale
Princeton
Stanford
Columbia
Cornell
UChic
Carnegie-Mellon
NYU
Harvey Mudd
Williams
Amherst
UC Berkeley
UCLA

Thanks in advance!

Good grades (nothing that will hold you back much), fantastic SAT score! However, your extra curriculars are pretty weak. Holding positions in clubs helps, but nothing that really jumps out. However, your research with the NASA guy will certainly help b/c it shows passion!

Harvard - 15%
Yale - 15%
Princeton - 15%
Stanford - 10% (in past research, it seems Stanford puts a larger weight on extracurriculars - especially athletics)
Columbia - 15-20%
U of Chicago - 35% (but they put a large emphasis on essays)
Carnegie Mellon - don’t know enough
NYU - don’t know enough
Harvey Mudd - VERY good shot with your scores!
Williams - see above
Amherst - always throws me off, hear about some random students getting accepted/rejected. So I really can’t guess.
UC Berkeley - 80-90%
UCLA - 90%

Columbia

Thanks! I’m just hoping that I will have a shot at Intel/Siemens with the research I’m doing at NASA.

Harvard- mid to high reach, just like everyone else
Yale- see harvard
Princeton- see harvard
Stanford- mid reach
Columbia- low to mid reach, good chance in my opinion
Cornell- low to mid reach
UChic- low reach, EC’s may hold you back
Carnegie-Mellon- match
NYU- match
Harvey Mudd- match
Williams- match
Amherst-match
UC Berkeley- match
UCLA-match

You have great stats! Unfortunately, most of the schools you listed can be quite unpredictable with their admissions and look for “well-roundedness” more than anything else. Your EC involvement is pretty good, but not exceptional. So, all in all, you have great chances compared to other applicant, but I can’t say anything with great certainty.

I wish that one day I meet with an Indian who is not a genius :stuck_out_tongue: , jk
really amazing stats . I’m not really good at chancing but gd luck anyway (;

Thanks haha :stuck_out_tongue: By no means am I a genius though

i think you have a really good chance at all your colleges, though you might want to invest more time in club activities to seal the deal for schools like Harvard
good luck :)

Bump10char!

Good GPA, Great SAT scores. Your research will certainly play a large role in your acceptance to these colleges. I say that you’re probably in at the schools other than the Ivies, depending on your essay. UChicago’s admissions depend a lot on your personality, so I guess it just depends. Great stuff, though. Good luck :)

Bump! I would appreciate a few more opinions! :)

Nice extracurrics!

I think that applying to all of these your bound to get into a few good ones, but i dont think the liberal arts are very likely. you come off a bit stereotypical with your activities, no offence. Theres nothing that i see that others havent done, nothing with personality, but the research is good. im sure youll get in to a few of these, but a bit of advice, the Ivies swap applicant lists to see who applied to multiple ivies, because that shows that they are only interested in the school for the prestige. it really doesnt seem like you are looking for schools that you really fit with, rather that sound good to say you go to. so maybe start narrowing it down to schools that actually intrigue you, and show those schools why your a good match. Good luck!

Harvard - High Reach (Just because it’s Harvard/Ivy)
Yale - High Reach (Just because it’s Yale/Ivy)
Princeton - High Reach (Just because it’s Princeton/Ivy)
Stanford - High Reach
Columbia - Mid Reach
Cornell - Low Reach, I personally think you’ll get in
University of Chicago - Low Reach/Match
Carnegie-Mellon - Match
NYU - Match
Harvey Mudd - Don’t know enough about to give an accurate evaluation
Williams - See Harvey Mudd
Amherst - See Harvey Mudd
UC Berkeley - Low Low Reach/Match
UCLA - Match

@Vermontlover93 is that really true about the Ivies switching lists? Well, I guess the whole point of this thread is for me to narrow down my list of schools, anyway. What’s a good number of private schools (besides the UCs) to apply to?

I think, for your stats, anywhere from 3-7 privates is a good match. Since you’re a California resident, it’ll be to your advantage to apply to as many UCs as you can as you are bound to be accepted by at least one. (Pick a backup UC in case Cal/UCLA falls through. I recommend Davis or Santa Cruz.) Your stats are good enough for UCLA and Cal, since UCs love numbers instead of ECs/“whole person” applicants anyway!

Also, since you’re in California and considering UCLA – why not USC? The engineering school is great and with your stats, you qualify for at least the half-tuition (if not full tuition) scholarship at USC. It’s worth it if you’d like to go to school for free, and it’s a better school as a whole than UCLA anyway, given the UC budget crisis.

The ECs are just so-so, but since you’re going for a math/science field, you can get away with it. You are at a disadvantage for being an Indian male for the Ivies. That’s just how it goes sometimes…

Harvard - high reach / probable rejection
Yale - high reach / probable acceptance
Princeton - high reach / probable rejection
Stanford - probable rejection (they like to reject Californians for diversity, even with great scores! If you’re from SoCal, your chances are better.)
Columbia - probable acceptance
Cornell - accepted
UChic - accepted
Carnegie-Mellon - accepted
NYU - accepted
Harvey Mudd - probable acceptance (good school!)
Williams - accepted
Amherst - accepted
UC Berkeley - probable acceptance
UCLA - probable acceptance

Thanks so much for the detailed analysis Zelda! I’m actually from the Bay Area (Stanford’s just a 20 minute drive away) so I guess that’s a no-go. I wasn’t planning on applying to Stanford, though (too close to home!).

Is it even worth it to apply to HYP then? I also can’t believe I omitted MIT! How do I fare for that?

Ooh, yeah. See, Stanford is tricky. Back when I was a senior at my Bay Area high school in 2006, our valedictorian, salutatorian and every other student in the top 10% of the class (myself included) was rejected from Stanford because we are also only about 15 minutes away. Many of these kids had the same (if not higher!) stats than you, so it was shocking to say the least.

One of the students appealed his decision and was told that because our HS was so close to Stanford AND because Stanford had offered admission to two of our student athletes, they had fulfilled an unspoken “quota” with students from our HS for that class. I was told the same thing happened the following year.

I suggest you ask your guidance counselor for the applied/admitted stats from your HS to Stanford and see if a similar thing occurred. Yes, it’s shady and unfair – but Stanford is a top ranked private school and can do whatever they want. If it doesn’t seem Stanford holds the same “rule” for your school, it can’t hurt – but only do it if you’d go there.

As far as HYP goes – if you can afford the application fees, why not? One of them could admit you and if you’re actually serious about attending one of them, the gamble is in your favor.

Just something to consider that played a big role in what school I chose – unless an OOS school gives you a large scholarship (or if money isn’t an issue) remember that CA residents qualify for the CalGrant if you have a 3.0 HS GPA or higher. It works out to about $10,000 a year that you DON’T have to repay. All you have to do is attend a California college. It’s the main reason why I turned down two full rides to schools back East to attend USC instead.

Interesting…

Bump!

Bump before I give up :P
