Applying under Chemistry Major.

I live in Hawaii and I'm asian

you seem to have the academics down, now just make sure you present your uniqueness well. i really think that’s what got me in. i was out-of-state, 1820 SAT, 4.3 GPA, and all IB courses (International Baccalaureate), but i also made sure to emphasize why i would enrich the campus: i’m an out-of-state, ethiopian student and there’s not too many of those floating around, lol. unlike some other universities, berkeley wants academically accomplished students (which you seem to have down) that are also not robots that can only function in the classroom. good luck, hope you get in!

konjotsi i had the same SAT score and I’m also doing IB what was your predicted grade?
Mine is 40 - do I have a chance of getting in?
Im also out-of-state from egypt (would they ever take into consideration that theres a revolution and they’d want to give me the opportunity?)

You’re in dude, don’t sweat it.

Is your 3.93 GPA weighted? What is your UC GPA? By the way, if your school is so “lousy” how come you are only in the top 20th percentile with a very respectable SAT score of 2220? Assuming that’s your weighted GPA, I’d say both are really high matches due to your decile ranking. I won’t be surprised if you get accepted nor will I be surprised if you don’t get accepted, to one or both.

Hope your family has the funds for OOS tuition. Otherwise, maybe look at privates that offer good financial aid.

Seriously, I don’t understand who would want to pay OOS tuition for Berkeley. It’s not worth it. Unless your EFC ~ 0 and the state/scholarships are footing most of your bill, consider other options. Look for a nice private school with small class sizes. Berkeley is BIG and impersonal. If you can’t get into a private school (you certainly have a good shot at one with your stats), then consider a good state school or another option. Just my opinion, some food for thought.

easylife808, I love you.
jshain, My crappy school is so ****ty that it misinformed me about my decile ranking. I’m in the top 10% and 3.96 is my weighted gpa. And thank you for your financial advice.

If you are applying to Berkeley’s college of chemistry, make sure to pick/list the major you are interested in: Chemistry, Chemical Biology, Chemical Engineering. At Berkeley, the admissions committee will look more favorably (not sure why) at applicants (to engineering and chemistry) that have decided on their major. Naturally, once you get accepted, you can always pick another major. Basically, do NOT just put undeclared if you are applying to UC Berkeley’s College of Engineering or Chemistry.

I go to Berkeley and I love the large student population. With 25,000 undergraduates, you are bound to find someone with similar interests to yours! since you are interested in the college of chemistry you will have smaller class sizes than in letters and sciences. I’m a double major in Bio and Comp Lit and I’ve taken classes with 800 people and classes when I’m the ONLY student. Both sides of the spectrum are great!
