I’m going yes to both - you’ll certainly be competitive - great rigor and ECs.

Of course, you can only ED ton one school (well for ED1). Good luck.

PS - I don’t believe U Mich has ED, just EA - so that’s not an issue at all…you can do both but only apply to BC if it’s your top choice…because it’s silly to apply ED and get bound if you’re not 100% sure.

Michigan is huge - BC isn’t…so that’s a bit off to me - those two schools as a match.

Good luck.

I am going to say yes on BC (but could be a deferral) and no on Michigan. Please come back with the results. Good luck!

What state do you live in?

I think you have a decent shot at BC…Is it affordable per the NPC?

As noted above, U Mich doesn’t have ED, but do make sure to get your app in EA. If you don’t live in Michigan, it’s a reach.

Good luck.

I am from Illinois. Boston College is somewhat affordable, with October 1st being tomorrow and my family having to pull out our tax forms, etc. to fill out FAFSA, we will be redoing the NPC.

somewhat affordable doesn’t sound affordable to me because whatever you think the college costs, add several thousand dollars more. Uber rides, late night pizza, trips into Boston and other places, travel home (yes, some is accounted in COA)…if you join organizations, etc. many have fees, etc.

I am curious at why a jesuit school and huge public school. You are going to study a major that will require grad school or will be low paying. So if a school is “somewhat” affordable which sounds like it’s not affordable, why not:

  1. Stay in-state - UIUC

  2. Find a school where you can profit from your fantastic performance - follow the thousands of Illinois residents who have made the trek to Tuscaloosa because your tuition after auto merit will be $3K-ish. Or how about Arizona which has a solid program and tuition would be $18K-ish. Or how about UGA which is a top public IR school - tuition is $31K, but you may get a half out of state waiver. Or Florida State, another strong IR program and you’ll get an OOS waiver making tuition about $7K.

You didn’t ask about others - but think about this - if you could go to Florida State for $100K for four years (and it’s less) and Michigan is $260K - is it worth spending that extra $160K for a degree in poli sci? At Bama, you spend worst case $80K.

If BC is somewhat affordable, what would having 100K+ more in the bank do for your family?

Don’t look at others as a step down. Look at them as a reward for your hard work - less stress on your family.

Ohio State, Miami of Ohio, Minnesota, UTK, Kentucky, U of South Carolina - name your school, great scholarships, etc. and fine Honors Programs.

If BC was more to your liking, what about a Depaul or Seton Hall, Creighton or take the religious part out…how about Bradley (check their scholarship estimator or Macalester or any of the Colleges that Change Lives - typically offer merit. U of Denver a great midsize for international relations and you’d likely get $30K merit (if you live in a dorm).

You didn’t ask this - you just asked about BC and Michigan…but if your family is hesitant, I just wanted to throw out another perspective because people throw spending $60 or $80K a year on school out there like it’s no big deal - and the truth is it is a big deal. And you have earned an opportunity to have your family spend a lot less!!!

Good luck to you.
