Hey Guys!
I am currently a junior who aspires to attend Brown University. I am an Asian American who, lives in NY in a middle/upper middle class household. I attend a competitive public school of which approx. 7, class of 2018 has been accepted into one or more Ivies. Brown has been my dream school since the sixth grade. I have been in advanced/honors classes since elementary school. Here are my stats:
GPA: 4.0 UW/ 4.37 W
SAT: 1500 (will retake again and some subject tests)
ACT: (Did not take, have been receiving 33-35 on practice tests)
Rank: Top 10% of Class (More specifically #8 at the moment)
AP’s: World History, Chemistry, Literature and Comp, Stat, US History
I have more AP’s including Gov and some IB Course planned out as well for my senior year.
Other Classes: International Relations, 3 Law Electives, Holocaust, Latin300
all other classes were taken at an honors level
Regents: Mainly 90’s-98. In eighth grade I received an 81 on my Earth Science regents but I can easily retake it, my teacher that year was not optimal.
School EC’s:
Varsity Cross Country and Track: All years since seventh grade. Was pulled up to varsity track in eighth grade.
(note: I have emailed the Brown Coach to be put on a watchlist)
Orchestra: Symphony Orchestra (300) 3 years

Science Olympiad: 3 Years
Model UN: 3 Years

Other/ Community Service:
I am a girl scout who will be receiving my gold award next year. I get approx. 80 hours of CS. I went to the middle school and created an organization of which helped many students begin to think about their future on a different level. Reached out to many SUNY’s and got admissions officers to talk to students.
Work Experience:
Local Bakery
Youth Enrichment Services Counselor
I want to be a political science or international relations major.
This isn’t too specific but I am willing to give any other needed info! Didn’t put any major awards down, but I do have a few that I would have to look at.
Do your school use Naviance? In the past several years, how many got admitted (NOT attending) to Brown? what are their stats? How’s your stats compared to them? Have you visited Brown? What attracts you the most to Brown? If you can answer all these questions, you’ll know your chance.
You have the stats to be competitive, but please don’t put all your dreams in one basket. There are a lot of other wonderful schools in this country. Work on building a balanced list and work on finding other places where you could be happy. The odds for even the most stellar candidate are not high.
Brown is a special place. But other colleges can be special too. Try to fall in love with some other colleges too and you are more likely to have a happy outcome.
Brown has a cool worldly vibe and is in a neat little neighborhood in the resurgent city of Providence. My junior HS student attended a residential pre-college STEM program there two summers ago, and while she loved the experience she got a taste of campus dining and housing and was not impressed. How strong is Brown in your area(s) of interest? Not every school (even an IVY) can be superior in every department. Your EC’s and stats are quite admirable, but as other posters have said, be sure to round out your college list with some viable options. Brown is #22 on a list of undergrad International Relations programs, but there plenty of other powerhouse schools that rate higher. https://foreignpolicy.com/2018/02/20/top-fifty-schools-international-relations-foreign-policy/ Finances are a factor as well - have you run Brown’s NPC to see how you would fare with aid?
I think that your chances of going to brown are really great if you get through with the watchlist and are an athlete. That will increase your chances of getting into the school. if you want to be a political science major, make sure that you can show brown that you have attempted to get your feet wet in that area. That way u can demonstrate your passionate or interest in the program at brown and talk about ur previous experiences.
@YummiYummi I would really appreciate a little help! I know this is late, I have been trying to stay off the college confidential website to alleviate some stress…
OP, for poli sci, what political or civic ECs (or community advocacy activities?) You’re a junior, find something asap. Unfortunately, the election is next week, doesn;t leave much time to volunteer on a campaign.
