And if my EC's aren't good enough, I'd highly appreciate it if you'd tell me why and how i can improve them.

Thanks!

Big list. How about cutting off all of the minor activities (20 hours here, 50 hours there) and all of the member of this. . .member of that. . . filler material.

You have no other APs and no test scores. No GPA.

You do not get admitted based on ECs.

ok the reason im writing this is because i want to know if these EC's are where they should be for top notch colleges....just the EC's not the full package. and 20, 50 hours doesnt sound like a lot but i actually spent a pretty good amount of my day doing them. and is club membership really filler material?

A club membership for one year? Yup. That's filler. If you're head of a club or spend a lot of time involved in club activities, that's great. Otherwise...not so much.

uh ses no offense or anything but your dead wrong. Just because all those clubs are down for one year doesn't mean I'm not continuing them next year. 2006-2007 basically = 2007-2008. I typed golf theory club wrong I actually took part in it junior year too. In fact the only club I disocntinued after one year was astronomy club, which actually ceased to exist. So basically, I've stayed with every club I started.

i think your long term commitments and awards and such are impressive, but just being a member of a club, not so much. the fact is that you only have 7 slots on the common app for ec's, and while you can (and should) attach a resume, colleges want to see what matters MOST to you, what you went above and beyond for, and what you had leadership in. don't worry about doing EVERYTHING.

If you don't have the grades EC's will NOT get you into HYPS alone.

You have decent ECs tbh. 2,385 hours of comm service...I really doubt that tbh...You have like 5 million clubs with no LD positions really...

And reading your ECs I just see a bunch of everything and not really "passion" in one thing. Maybe German or tutoring but really not much.

...2385 hours of community service? where did u come up with that? I have:

░ Volunteered at Fox Chase Cancer Center (150 hours)
• 50 Hours spent analyzing experiments in the lab of Temple University (2005)• Attended Persian Society and Shabahang meetings and aided in their organization (15 hours)

ah i understand u mean 215 hours! gotcha

You'd better hope you don't have to have an interview to get in. The 2385 is probably taking into account the tutoring, but if you were paid for it it becomes less impressive.

ah i see. but doesn't employment count towards something?

and why should i hope not to have an interview, i actually do really well in job interviews

Something yes, but it obviously won't mean as much as if it had been volunteer. Include it if they ask for employment but don't expect it to be a huge boost to your application.

Hopefully you interview different than you post on message boards, because you're sort of coming across as a, for lack of a better word, ahole on here.
For example:
"ah i understand u mean 215 hours! gotcha"
and
"uh ses no offense or anything but your dead wrong."
These people are trying to help you and you're sarcastically snapping at them. You can correct someone who makes an incorrect assumption about something you said in much better ways.

alright thanks.

i can see where ur comnig from but I really wasn't trying to be mean to ses, like it may sound mean on the internet but its really not. pitch on the other hand said on my other thread that I was lying about one, if not both, parts of my profile. i think that was pretty uncalled for.
and chuy i really appreciate ur input how do you think i can improve my EC's because I guess their weak for the colleges I'm applying to?

well if you really want to know how I think your EC's stand compared to others who will be applying to HYPS for the coming application season, I'd say that your EC's are good, but average. Something I realized recently was that you're really limited to 7 slots if you're applying by Common App. I'm not sure, but I don't think schools want supplementals unless stated. So that means that you'll need to figure out which 7 of your EC's best stand out, or best represent who you are. You seem to have a lot of involvement as a member of clubs, but where's the leadership? If you've been in that many clubs, that means not too many of your EC's have an extreme amount of dedication; there's only so many hours in a day. Your activities are scattered, and the fact that you have only 7 slots to explain what you did, how much you did it, and what makes you stand out from others who did the activity, makes it harder. It'll be at this point where you have to decide whether it's worth mentioning EC's such as "knowing a foreign language", which I don't consider an EC much at all unless you were mentoring with an ambassador or something like that, or Ultimate Frisbee Club.

well here's how i put my EC's on the common app:

1.) Class Secretary (2 years)
2.) JV Tennis (1 year)
3.) Fox Chase Cancer Center (150 hours)
4.) NHS Delegate (2 years)
5.) German Club (4 years-newsletter editor)
6.) Trumpet Player (2 years)
7.) Chess Club (3 years- attendance officer)

Work Experience:

1.) Kumon Tutoring (10 hrs/week) (5 years)
2.) Personal Tutoring (1hr/week w/o pay) (2 hrs/week with pay) (2 years)
3.) Babysitter (5 hrs/week) (4 months)

hows that sound?

Get rid of JV tennis, Class secretary, trumpet player...that stuff is pretty dull and unimpressive.

You need to show a clear passion--maybe a passion for science and research? Then you could put all your research and science ECs down instead of random filler.

whoa really? u sure, even about class of 2008 secretary (i put 5 hours/week into that)? ill get rid of JV tennis and trumpet player, but i don't want those to be overlooked because i did put lots of time into them. maybe u misunderstood class secretary, it is for my entire class (415) and is much bigger than things like NHS delegate and German/Chess club, which you didn't point out as dull. and if there wasnt a misunderstanding, then should i also take out german/chess club leaderhsip positions and nhs delegate? Would you recommend attaching a resume to my application?

1.) Class Secretary (2 years)
2.) JV Tennis (1 year)
3.) Fox Chase Cancer Center (150 hours)
4.) NHS Delegate (2 years)
5.) German Club (4 years-newsletter editor)
6.) Trumpet Player (2 years)
7.) Chess Club (3 years- attendance officer)

okay, so from what I see, you're lacking in 4 year commitments. I mean, they are all good extracurriculars, and the range is nice. But, you've only done tennis for a year (have you done any more tennis outside of school? you might want to mention that then) and class secretary, NHS delegate, and trumpet for 2 years. I'm not being critical in any way, don't get me wrong, but though its good you took the initiative to learn an instrument, was it because you wanted to do it or was it to stack your resume? Most instruments take years to master; you may want to choose a focus somewhere else if you aren't very experienced. Remember, if you want to apply to the top notch schools, they are very competitive, and you'll be applying against students who've probably played the trumpet since elementary school. By no means let my advice deter you, but understand what I'm saying. Put some thought into figuring out who you really are, and how those activities represent you. That will make you seem tangible to the adcom reader.

Ok I see part of those hours are work.

I thought you were saying you have 2,385 hours of comm service which is ridiculous and you would obviously be lying if you did that much.

Sorry for the misunderstanding.

well rememberme u hafta remember that on the common app theres only room for high school achievements. yes, i played trumpt from 4-10 garde and violin from 3-8, but since I can't put it on the common app, would u recommend attahcing a resume? and I have played tennis out of school at various clubs, for about 7 years now, but once again, since that is not available on the common app, should i attach a resume?

and pitch i too apologize for my response i really didn't mean for it to sound mean I was just joking around

Your EC's look really time consuming and interesting. Unfortunetely, doing 100 things isn't something that gets you into college; however, doing one thing really well is a lot more beneficial. I spoke to the Stanford admissions officer and was told that "well rounded students aren't doing as well as those who are passionate about one thing". Sure, some of your stuff is interesting, but a college may look at that (of course I am no admissions officers) and think that you are trying to cram your resume and didn't dig deep into one passion. Bottom line-it's a toss up, the Common App allows for 7 EC's and anything above that may show college officers that you are trying to do too many things not because you are good at them/because you care about them, but because you want to go to college, which will turn a lot of colleges away from you. On the other hand some colleges may find it attractive, so while you do a lot, it isn't setting you apart (unless you are nationally ranked in some of those things, then it shows passions, but reading it over it didn't come across that way).
