Chance Me Chicago!

Heyaaaa.

White dude in a public school in Florida, 3.7 UW, 4.2 W. Top 10%.

3 prior AP classes (3 - WH, 4 - Bio, 5 - APUSH), taking 6 tests this year (Chem, Calc BC, Psych, US Gov, Microecon, Lit).

I've taken several Dual Enrollment classes including English Composition 1 and 2, Public Speaking, Intro to British Literature, Microcomputer Apps, Business Communications, College Algebra and currently Intro to Chemistry and Chemistry Lab.

Very confident in Chem (intended major) and Calc. Psych is easy, Lit is also easy. Looking at 3 5's, possibly 4, and maybe a 3 to 4 in Gov and Econ. 5's would be a miracle.

Tests: 1970 SAT 640 CR / 650 M / 680 W; 33 ACT

EC: President - Science National Honor Society (2 yrs member)

Secretary - Future Business Leaders of America (3 yrs member)
History Honor Society (3 yrs member)
Spanish Honor Society (1 yr member)
Chess Club (1 yr member)
Odyssey of the Mind (8 yrs member)
I'm likely forgetting something.

Essays: I only have one done so far, but I feel it's pretty solid? If you want a copy just ask.

Now the all important school list:

UChicago - top choice, will apply ED.
Cornell U
U Washington, St. Louis
Tufts U
Johns Hopkins

In my opinion, your grades and sats do not really stand out. They are good, but considering the colleges you are looking at (especially UChicago), they are relatively average. Many people who apply also have your same stats and ecs if not better.

I think that all the schools you listed are slight reaches and UChicago is definitely a far reach. (I’m applying there too  ) So basically, my advice is for you to really boost up your sats to around 2100+ and add some more ecs (do you do sports?) If you want me to read/edit your essays, I’d be happy to. Hope I helped! :)

UChicago only looks at CR+M.

Don’t retake your Sat. A 33 ACT is fine. But you have stats that most people applying to those schools have and you have nothing else. I’m not feeling any passion when I read this. I feel no reason to admit you over someone else applying there. I would say they are all reaches because I don’t see anything unique or special about you that makes me want you at my college.

Do you have matches and safeties?

My safeties are in state schools. I forgot to mention that my financial situation is less than 50k/yr.

@Wasian 88: Yeah, some essay help would be good. Thank you!

@picklechicken37: What would you recommend I do to fix that? I mean, I could list every single thing I did in 8 years of OotM, because that’s my absolute favorite EC ever. I could list every award I’ve ever received I guess. Idrk how to portray passion without an essay. You can read mine if you want!

@Catria: My safeties are all in state schools. USF is my top safety.

Stats wise, I think you stand a good shot. It’s really all about your essays. UChicago is really big on essays so work hard and pour your heart and soul into them! I can read yours if you’d like :)

@ilovelifewow: I sent it via an email! Thank you for your help. :)

Try to start a chemistry club, or an internship, or start volunteering somewhere cool before November so you seem more unique and passionate. And I get the feeling after some visits and info sessions that it’s your essay that will make or break you so be really creative! Good luck!!

Oops I forgot something, going back to edit it in now.

Orrrrrrrrrrrr not.

Imagine that Volunteer Tutor/Teacher’s Aid is up there. I have about 100 volunteer hours through that.
