Chance me communications?

I go to a school of about 1,400 students in Washington State.

SATs: (710 verbal, 620 m, 640 writing) Haven't taken SAT IIs yet but will probably get between 700-800 as I will pick ones that play to my strengths.

GPA: ~3.7 unweighted, every class is an IB class except Newspaper.

Extras:
2 years varsity basketball (junior, senior)
2 years varsity cross country (freshman, sophomore)
4 years varsity track

Paged twice for the state legislature, once for the house and once for the senate

Helped to raise $100,000 for a school play I was in to go to Edinburgh, Scotland to participate in the prestigious Fringe Festival

Was in a choir that went to Japan and Washington DC

3 years on the school paper, 1 year as a Copy Editor, 1 year as Editor-in-Chief

Attended Boys State as a junior, this mock government thing that you are nominated for held at a university

Won the schools writing award for a piece I submitted junior year

Various work experience and other ECs: workshops, etc.

Do I have a shot? Thanks!

Also, forgot to add that typically one or two kids a year from my school go to USC.

Your only problem will be picking which of your many great ec's you will write about in your essays.

Good luck!

hah with that list of EC's I wouldn't think you would have a problem. People have gotten in with a lot less

You look like a strong candidate - the only aspect of your application that is somewhat worrisome is the SAT Math and, to a lesser extent, your writing score. Nonetheless, on balance I think you have a good shot at getting in. Keep in mind though, that admissions have been getting much more selective, and it is not outside the realm of possibility for you to get rejected. Good luck, your accomplishments are impressive!

Communications shouldn't be hard to get into, its just about getting into the school itself. I would help if I knew the stats these days. o.O but yeah if you make it in to USC dont worry about not getting into Communications school.

ECs look good, both GPA and SATs are on the low end of what was posted in the admitted students thread this year (which is not necessarily representative of the admitted class profile). The absolute number of the GPA is meaningless, class rank is much more important. If you are in the top 10% weighted, the 3.7 number does not matter. As has been written in many, many placed, don't be led to believe that great ECs and essays can offset GPA and test scores that are not up to snuff. I am not implying that your stats are unacceptably low, but all the oohs and aahs over the ECs (which are indeed great) could lul you into complacency. I would view ECs as nothing more than a source of essay topics and a tiebreaker for the adcom, my sense is that they are used by the selective schools as a reason NOT to admit more than as a reason to admit.

You look like a strong candidate, but we did see many people with better numbers (SAT and GPA) get turned away this year. Be prepared to be offered Spring Admission if you don't make the cut for Fall admission - that happened to several kids from my S's highly selective high school this year. Since you're in an IB program, your GPA looks fine to me, but you might consider taking the SAT again, or trying the ACT. I've heard it can be a better test for some students who don't rock the math portion of the SAT. Good luck!
