Chance Me? Concerned junior... (Will also chance back)

Here are my stats:

Overall about Me: Rising Senior (Class of 2012), White, Jewish, Female, Upper Middle Class

Interested in: Cornell ILR School, considering career in a non-traditional business setting (i.e. not Wall Street), possibly in entertainment or sport management

School: Very competitive public high school in central NJ. Ranked 10th overall in the state.

SAT: I got a 2090 my first try (620 CR, 740 M, 730 W) and a 2190 (690 CR, 760 M, 740 W)
the second try.

Subject Tests: Math II: 720, US History: 770, Literature: 610 (Not sending the literature score in)

APs: APUSH (5) However, this is the only AP I have taken in my high school "career." Fortunately, I do plan on taking AP Econ, AP Stat, and AP Art History my senior year.

Extracurriculars: I tend to be involved in more charitable clubs (Rotary, NHS,) and school administrative positions (Principal's Advisory, Student Representative for my school district's Steering Committee, as well as part of the first group of Student Recognition Recipients) rather than ethnic, literary or athletic extras.

I also engage in a fair amount of charity work (through the Jewish Family and Children's Service organization in my area). I have been involved with the JFCS's Jewish Community Youth Foundation program (a Jewish teen philanthropy program) since the 8th grade and have been on the Youth Advisory Board for the program since 10th grade.

Also do some writing for a national blog that's been publicized on CNN, and even Real Housewives of Orange County. Some of my articles have lead to my administrative positions.

Recs: My Calc and English 11 Honors teachers. Both women were lovely and would likely have positive things to write about me. Also considering two of the three vice principals at my school since I have maintained good relations with them. Guidance counselor also will likely give me a stellar review.

Legacy:
Mom: Graduated Columbia Dental School (last year, started a scholarship at the Dental School), teaches at UPenn Dental School

Dad: Graduated Columbia University (through joint program with the Jewish Theological Seminary), Cornell Law School (including donations)

Paternal Grandfather: University of Miami engineering program (I have no interest in this school)

Maternal Grandfather: NYU Undergrad (starting at 16, graduating at 19), Columbia Dental School, became a professor at the Dental School in his early 20s

Summer Programs: 9th Grade: UMass Amherst (through a private company), 10th Grade: Michigan (through a private company), 11th Grade (i.e. this summer): Cornell (through the university's program)

Other Schools Considered: My Full List. Asterisks indicate legacy (Undergrad and Grad), Dollar signs indicate money was donated. "At" sign indicates attended a summer program

Reaches:
Cornell $@
Columbia *$
UPenn
Stanford (Reach, yet if I get rejected, I will not be upset)
Northwestern (Ditto)

Matches:
Michigan@
NYU*
UCLA

Safeties:
Pitt (Honors)
Minnesota
UMass Amherst@
Rutgers

Any help would be greatly commended and appreciated!

What is your GPA???

GPA: My school does not weight my GPA on a 4 point scale. Instead they do it out of 100

UW: 90.8
W:94.2

Your academics are sub-par (for your top choices) but your leadership roles are sufficient. I think you lack significant (if any b/c you didn’t specify) awards, but that CNN report is quite impressive. And due to the fact a lot of your relatives are from Columbia, you have a REALLLLLYYYYY high chance of making it in. Just try to shoot for a 2250+ on SAT I and I’d say you’re 99%

Stanford is definitely a reach; Cornell not so much because you are also a legacy applicant; UPenn is also a bit of a reach because of your grades (Edit: Whoops didn’t see your legacy. Again, you have a decent chance but don’t just rely on legacy for acceptance).

If you’ve time, chance back: Mine[/url”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1179672-chance-me-ivy-league-please.html]Mine

Some Further Notes:

Clarification: A report I made was not on CNN, but the blog is becoming nationally recognized through CNN. However, I have published about 20 articles (I have been with this internship since 10th grade)

Academics: My school weights my GPA depending on whether or not I have pushed myself and taken Honors or AP courses by adding 5 percentage points to the final grade of the course and sending that number to colleges. I have taken the following Honors and AP Courses (final grade UW/W in parentheses)

Freshman:
Algebra II Honors (87/92)
Physics Honors (84/89)
English 9 Honors (92/97)

Sophomore:
AP US History Part I (87/92)
Chemistry Honors (92/97)
English 10 Honors (87/92)

Junior:
AP US History Part II (84/89)
Spanish V Honors (85/90)
Biology Honors (92/97)
English 11 Honors (89/94)

SATs: I have no intentions of taking the SATs a third time, nor do I have intentions of taking any more SAT IIs or attempting the ACT

Again, Stanford and Northwestern are merely crapshoots. I am not expecting to get in.

It’s good that you have legacy to back you up, that’ll definitely make Columbia and Cornell good possibilities. Your academics are good but unspectacular for your top choices. Your EC’s are pretty nice and well spread out, and those will help round out your app. Write a great essay and you’ll be set for your matches and some of your reaches.

On that note, your chances for stanford are pretty bleak, just like most people… :stuck_out_tongue: Your app just isn’t ultra-super-spectacular enough. Similar point for Northwestern, but to a lesser extent of course. NW is a good high-reach for you.

Your chances are good! Just be sure to take challenging classes senior year. On a side note your out-of-state status will definitely help with UCLA, what with the CA budget crisis… (CA kid speaking here)

Chance me back if you’ve got a minute
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1180423-chances-mid-high-tier.html</a></p>

Course Load for Next Year:
3 APs (Economics, Statistics, Art History) but 4 exams (My school’s AP Econ covers both Macro and Micro)
1 Honors: English 12
3 Electives: American Film Studies, Home Economics, Gym (required to take anyway)

Also, Correction with GPA:
UW: 91.7
W: 94.3

(I know, still not good enough for some schools =P)

shameless bump?

Cornell - Low reach
Columbia - Low reach
UPenn - Mid reach
Stanford - High reach
Northwestern - Low reach/high match (I think you’re overestimating Northwestern)
Michigan - Match
NYU - Match
UCLA - Match

I think you are essentially “in” at your safeties, and you have a great shot at Cornell and Columbia. I only put low reach because I’m not sure how much money you donated, but if it was 1 million+, then you have a really, really good shot. Just up those scores and be sure to focus at least one essay on that blog of yours–that sounds very interesting, and if I were an officer, I’d want to know more.

Thanks for chancing me, and good luck! I think you have an overall decent shot everywhere :)

I suggest you take the SAT again to ensure you get into the schools you really want. It’s a bit low for some of the schools on your list. Legacies can be rejected from schools if the admissions don’t think the grades are up to par. I don’t think the SATs are terrible, but it could be risky?

Cornell - acceptance
Columbia - possible acceptance (I’d be more confident if the SAT was higher)
UPenn - possible acceptance/waitlist
Stanford - rejection
Northwestern - possible rejection
Michigan - acceptance
NYU - acceptance
UCLA - possible acceptance (your SATs and GPA are a bit on the average/low for UCLA, but they are hungry for OOS students right now)

You are 100% in at all your safeties. Good list there.

I think there are some more mid-level schools you should consider that are favorable reaches or perfect matches given your scores. Some suggestions:

USC (they have entertainment and sports business programs/concentrations; given the location it seems to be more of a match for this interest versus somewhere like Michigan or Northwestern)
Georgetown
UVA
Vanderbilt
Carnegie Mellon
UT Austin
Drexel (entertainment management programs)

You are pretty well set for your safeties and matches. Your reaches are reaches for anyone so I can’t really say for sure but best of luck to you.
