Chance me. Confused!

GPA 3.5 weighted mostly honors and AP classes.
Class Rank 150 out of 420.
Some ECs, not many due to family illness (death of my father) but some sports and school spirit.
Current SAT is 1800 but waiting for second score. I studied on my own the first time but took a prep course and REALLY studied the second time.

Looking at Computer Science (information/web development) or English major.

Schools:

UMass Amherst
Smith
University of Minnesota (free app / no essay)
NYU Polytech
Fordham University
Boston University
Boston College

Any other suggestions in NY or MA appreciated.

Met with my counselor today and she wants me to add Providence College, Hartwick (never heard of it), SUNY Albany, SUNY Stony Brook and Penn State.

I have no family to ask about any of this and my counselor appears to be just matching me up with a lot of schools that I can’t afford all the app fees to. She told me that it’s better to apply to many schools so I have a chance to get in somewhere. I’ve worked hard in high school and she has me scared that I’m not getting in anywhere.

Please help.

You can get fee waivers if that is an issue. You shouldn’t apply to too many schools, but you do need safeties and matches.

We visited Hartwick for computer science and liked the program. S just liked another program better and that’s where he ended up. You would be accepted there, it would just be a matter of how much financial aid they would give you. As I recall, they were pretty generous, but then they have a high sticker price. It is a small school - about 1500 students. Pretty area and campus, although very hilly. If you apply online, they say there is no application fee, so it would be worth a shot. From the Hartwick website::

Application Fee and Fee Waiver
The application fee of $35, made payable to Hartwick College, must
accompany the application. Application fee waivers for both freshman
and transfer applicants are made available to:
• Students who have an official Hartwick campus visit
• Online applicants
• International applicants
• Students who have received official notification of scholarship eligibility
