Your family’s income will have no bearing on admission, I think your chances are below average. Male admit rate to COE is one of the lowest at Cornell.

Try to make your essays really good. Then you’ll have a decent shot.

csdad, are my stats just not good enough?

Your family’s income WILL have a bearing on admission, trust me. Apply for the HEOP program. It’s a very good experience to be in HEOP (Higher Education Opportunities Program) because it’ll place you into PSP (Prefreshman Summer Program). Most kids make tons of friends during PSP, and it seems really fun from the way most of my friends described it.
Best of luck. I’d say you have a good shot.

HopeWishCry, thought of HEOP, but student must be a NYS resident, which the OP isn’t, correct? Applying[/url”>http://www.oadi.cornell.edu/heop/prospective/applying/index.cfm]Applying

I think you have a decent chance, provided your SAT II’s improve drastically. If you love the school and you are sure it’s affordable (since ED is binding, you can’t weigh financial aid offers from colleges before enrolling), it’s worth a shot.

Thanks, I’m only worrying about my SAT II’s and will decide if I can improve and take them again.

Hmmm @csdad, interesting. I had a friend that was part of PSP (low income reasons), and he was from Georgia. And I knew a Texan kid in PSP as well, for income reasons.

Can you explain the PSP?

“Your family’s income WILL have a bearing on admission, trust me.”

Cornell disagrees: [Cornell affirms commitment to need-blind admissions and robust need-based aid | Cornell Chronicle](Cornell affirms commitment to need-blind admissions and robust need-based aid | Cornell Chronicle)

“If you love the school and you are sure it’s affordable …”

You don’t need to be sure (though using the Net Price Calculator helps to not waste the application fee); if the ED FA offer is insufficient to support attendance, you say thanks but no thanks, and apply elsewhere RD.

…I do think that Cornell is “need-blind” in admissions with the exception of HEOP. From the HEOP guidelines: " Those who display the potential and ability to succeed, but are inadmissible to Cornell under regular admissions standards.", thus admissions has to know they are an HEOP student, or none would ever be admitted OR they have a separate HEOP admit committee which is separate from each college’s admit procedure?

I think you can explain unfair circumstances in an essay in a certain part of the common app. Other than that I don’t think Cornell adcoms can understand your circumstances. Your stats aren’t that bad to me, the only killers are your Test Scores which you can retake in October and November. That said, your chances are average since you have no hooks.

Male admit rate to COE is around 15%, the OP’s profile is good, but in no way outstanding, given the admit rate his chances are below average.

csdad do you know the female admit rate to COE?

I think fall of 2011 was the last time they had stats that detailed available. I’m pretty sure that the female admit rate to COE was around 35%

Take the SAT’s again ASAP. Write a killer essay. Apply ED, but have other applications ready to go. you never know!

Thanks for the advice guys
