Hello,
I am a rising senior from Maryland.
End of junior year GPA 3.64 ( i had a really bad freshman year because of a family tragedy and I explained that in essays) and 4.42 Weighted.
ACT: 33.25 and 9 on writing
SAT2: Math 2: 740 and Physics 680.
Won a scholarship to do research in Israel, Scholarly Athlete Award
EC’s: Captain of Debate Team, Won Many Debate Tournaments, Ranked as high as #7 in the country for debate, takes up most of my time. Member of varsity squash team. 120 community service hours
Attended Cornell Summer College, Did an Engineering program at Univ. of Mich. and did engineering research at the Technion Institute.
7 AP’s.
15 family members have attended Cornell. 2 parents, 2 grandparents, and the rest are aunts, uncles and cousins.
Chance Me for Cornell Engineering Early Decision Please!
Also if you don’t mind can you chance me for Vanderbilt, UCLA, Berkeley, USC and Rice??
Thanks!!!
My ACT breakdown is 33 E, 33M, 36 R, and 31 S. I also forgot to add that I did JV lacrosse my freshman and sophomore year.
I think you should retake that SAT Physics test…the curve is pretty generous. I recommend end Princeton Review’s book, it’s pretty great, other than that man I don’t really know, but I wish you the best of luck.
I would retake math for at least a 760, but being a legacy should help
I like your 33.25 ACT. Very unique.
I’m from New York so I’m familiar with here. 33.25 ACT? Interesting lol. Also I feel you are a good candidate for Cornell. I would love to attend Cornell but they don’t have my major! Also at least you do not have the weight of Regents Exams on your shoulders!
I know virtually nothing about Ivy League (or other elite) admissions, but I like that you don’t have a laundry list of ECs; you have a couple that you are clearly quite invested in. Your chances are low because it is simply a selective school, but I would say that you have a better chance than some.
When I say 33.25 I just mean that 33.25 is the mean of my individual section scores
I’m pretty sure that would round to a 33, haha.
It does. idk i was just trying to be specific
Hi, I got into Cornell Engineering this year so I’ll tell you from what I’ve known. I would try taking that ACT one more time and bump it to a 34. Trust me, the likelihood of your grade going down is very low. And if you are really really sure you want this, you should go ahead and apply early decision. I agree with the above statement about retaking the physics, at least try to bump it up into the 700 range.
Since you are a rising senior, leadership positions may be coming your way. Try for as many as possible. Although laundry listing is a bad idea, having 3 or 4 core leadership positions showcases your personality (and the fact that you are likable, outgoing and generally not stuck to your desk all day).
Also, the CoE likes to see kids strong in mathematics. Have you taken AP Calculus or will you? That’s all I can think of off the top of my head.
I think you have a very good chance if you bring up a couple of grades and gain some leadership.
Hey! While I don’t know too much about admissions, as I’m only a junior, I do know that your legacy will definitely help you a ton! As long as your grades are pretty good, you should have a great chance of being accepted of getting into Cornell. I know close friends whose parents went to Cornell, and even with mediocre grades and EC’s, they were accepted.
Hey I also got into and will be attending Cornell for engineering in a few days. I’d say overall, you seem to be a good candidate, but there is always work to be done. I think you know that your GPA is low, but not terrible. In fact I had about a 93 unweighted GPA on my mid-year transcript, and still got in regular. I think you ACT is very good, but give it another shot. I went from getting two 33s to a 34 on my final try. Like the previous Cornellian said, I think you can do more to improve both SAT II scores as it’s crucial to show strength in math and science for CoE. For reference my Math II 800 was only like 70-80th percentile at Cornell. As for your ECs, they’re actually decent considering you spend lots of time focusing on a few activities. It shows dedication something I’m sure they like since my only real EC was playing ice hockey for 10 years. I think your essays will be crucial to getting you over to the accept pile. Finally, don’t sell yourself short. I would risk applying RD to see where else you could get into and what they could offer. As a legacy at Cornell, I took that risk and actually got some really good offers from other great schools that almost persuaded me against Cornell, but Big Red runs in my blood, and I love everything about Cornell. If you have any questions feel free to PM me!
