The above link include my stats. I have a bad gpa because of my 9th grade, but I do have an upwards trend and finished with a 4.0 in 11th grade. My courses are still rigourus, I am taking 8 aps total including senior year, and have gotten 5s on all 4 ap tests I have taken so far. Not to mention my SAT is 1560, which I think is pretty good. All thats to say I know my gpa is really bad, but hopefully some of this information and my extra curricular stuff can make up for this.
Regardless, what are my chances at CU Boulder for CS. I have seen their program and really like the AI courses they have, and their ranking in CS is also really good. Do I have a good chance there, is it a target, low target, reach, or safety?
As I’m sure you know, your SAT is well above the 75% for Boulder, and your 10-12 grade gpa is close to their 50% mark. While an 81% admit rate looks very promising, you’re applying for one of the most competitive programs, at CU and most colleges. If you weren’t applying for CS, I’d say you were a match. As a CS major, it’s a lot more unpredictable. I’d say low reach, except I could easily see you getting waitlisted for CS but eventually getting in when the high stats in-state kids decline. They could also admit you under another major or a provisional program, like they do for engineering—their pre-engineering option.
Boulder likes out of state kids because they’ll likely be full pay. Are your parents okay with the price tag?
CU has 2 difference CS programs, one in Arts and Sciences (and if you are double majoring that’s the one you’ll probably want) and the other in engineering.
I think you have a good chance at A&S, but less of a chance in engineering.
Yes, I believe if you apply to engineering, there is a possibility of being deferred.
OP also wants cognitive science, which would be in the A&S school. If he wants both, and does CS in engineering, that would be a double degree, not just a double major, and require completing the requirements for both colleges.
I’d say you’re an easy admit. I can’t imagine a 3.9/32 with 11 APs not getting in for biology. Unfortunately, I’m not an AO at Boulder, but I’d be very surprised if they turned you down.
