Chance me Davidson

I am from a small town in Oregon, male, and I intend to Major in classics.

Class Rank: 2/125
GPA: 4.0 (UW) 4.1 (W)

Took, and got As in, 3 of 4 APs offered (not interested in Bio)
got 4 on AP USH test

SAT: 740 CR, 670 M, 750 W (2160)

Academic Honors: Dartmouth Book Award (2010), AP US History Student of the Year (2010), Spanish 1 Student of the Year (2008), OSAA Dairy Farmers of Oregon Top 10 Academic All State (2008, 09, 10), Pacific Northwest Ski Association Honor Role (2009)

ECs: Mock Trial State Finalists, President of HS FCA, President of HS Rock Climbing Club, Leader/Mentor for middle school youth group (2009-2011), Track Team Captain (2010), Varsity Football (2009, 2010), Link Crew Leader (freshman transition mentor), IEE Intern (wilderness guide/raft guide), Part time job at athletic club since 2006 (Asst. Mgr. Maint. Dept.), 3 weeks volunteer service at YoungLife Summer camp.

Great teacher recs

I think you’ll have pretty good shot at Davidson! Maybe think about taking the SAT again (670 on math certainly won’t keep you out, but an above 700 score will be a help!)
Living in Oregon might be helpful geographic-diversity-wise.
But these schools are all so selective, you never really know for sure.
Best of luck to you Jordansky!

p.s. are you considering other great lib arts schools, Washington and Lee is another top school in the south (but, admittedly, a little more right wing), maybe some schools like Colgate would strike your fancy! =)

FWIW I think it’s not a sure thing however you have a number of things working for you -
where you are from, your intended major, and a nice mix of strong academics with
athletics and outdoorsy and leadership EC’s. Would not mind stronger AP scores and it’s too bad your high school does not offer very many. You imply you scored under 4 on 2 out of 3 you have taken. Did you take AP Virgil? I assume you have taken Latin with your
intended major. I am also assuming a smallish public high school so no Greek.

I say low reach in regular round with a somewhat better shot in ED round just because the
ED1 + ED2 acceptance rate is something like 40% and they fill a lot of the class with ED.
The exact breakdown for the current freshmen class is available on the school website. If memory serves (it may not at my age!) something like 213 out of 490/495 were ED admits for the Class of 2013. Davidson’s overall acceptance rate increased 3 points last year, from about 26% for the Class of 2013 to about 29% for the current freshmen Class of 2014. Without knowing if you will need FA it’s hard to counsel you to apply ED so I will
stick with low reach and be rooting hard for you!!

I think you have a good chance. By the way, I am interested in Davidson, too. But my SAT score is a little bit lower.

Sorry my explanation of the APs was a tad unclear I see. I took AP US History and got a 4 on the test. I am currently taking AP Eng Lit and AP calc AB but obviously havent taken the tests yet. The only other AP my school offers is Bio, which I will not take. No Latin, no greek (does any school still have those? If so, we are getting shafted here in central Oregon)

Haha, yes schools still have Latin and Greek. Are you really planning on majoring in classics without any coursework in either?

Well, yes. is that uncommon? possible?

Uncommon? Yes. Possible? Yes.

I’m in my fourth year of Latin, and I can’t even imagine majoring in classics. I’ve spent four years with the language, and I still am extremely far from a proficient reader. Latin is very difficult, and may be difficult to become proficient in four years. Especially considering classics is more than just Latin. It will include Latin, Greek, lots of history, mythology, philosophy, etc. I assume a lot of the upper coursework would include reading actual Latin text not for the sake of learning the language, but learning about the history and times. If you can’t read the Latin, you’ll be at a big disadvantage in all your classics classes. Seems like quite a leap in the dark to major in something you’ve never studied at all. Cogita ante salis.

i think you have a great shot!

I think that the only people that can chance you are the admissions people, Jordansky. An online forum probably isn’t the best place to share your statistics.

Any one know who received the Belk or Baker scholarships in past years? What type of candidates are strong enough to win those awards? How much of it is based on EC and leadership/community service vs. academic stats?
