I have one full summer and about six months of school-year work experience. I don't have many community service hours but I founded a local activist organization which I devote around 5 hours each week to every week since 10th grade.

I've just gotten really tense the past few days... lemme know what you think.

You are a very well-rounded student with your grades, SAT scores, and especially getting at least semifinalist in both intel and siemens competition (those alone might get you in). Maybe they deferred you because your major is popular. I hope you get in because you deserve to.

You seem very impressive. This time of year makes it difficult, but I encourage you to enjoy your senior year of high school. You’ll never get it back. Although neither I nor anyone else on this forum is qualified to quantify your odds of admission, I am confident that you will end up at a great college (perhaps Columbia!). Congrats on a very impressive first 18 years of your life!

Did you apply to SEAS or CC? You seem to be a perfect fit for SEAS.

You got everything. If you don’t make it in, I won’t ever post on CC again

I don’t see why you got deferred…I would have honestly called and asked…There is NO reason for them to have deferred you…

You did not get deferred because of your major, Columbia is a college and a liberal arts school, so what you put down literally does not matter at all. Majors are selected sophomore year.

Did you apply to SEAS or CC. If you applied to SEAS, then I would say that there was absolutely NO reason for you to not have had already gotten in. I would probably say the same if you applied to CC

Conorske- your right, the major you choose doesn’t really mean anything once your enrolled, but it does affect your chances. Look at it this way, while most of us don’t know exactly what major we want, we simply don’t know enough to know what one suits us, we know what general direction we want to go. Imagine them admitting 90% English and history lovers all four years, most of whom choose an English/history major their sophmore year. It would be a mess and Columbia’s other programs would be shot. Admissions officers have to take into account your major interests to keep things balanced. If they didn’t need/care, they probably wouldn’t ask.

^
So is it an advantage to apply undeclared or a major that’s not done by a lot of people?

In case anyone was interested, I got rejected from Columbia, Harvard, Brown, Yale, and Cornell. Waitlisted at Dartmouth and accepted at UPenn o.O

Congrats on Penn–a truly great school! College admissions can appear arbitrary and capricious, but soon you won’t care any more…

Just curious: when you say “regional semi-finalist” for Siemens do you mean semi-finalist or regional finalist? If you were a regional finalist you would have presented your project to a panel of judges at a research institution, but if you were a semi-finalist you would have just received a notice to that effect.

You have excellent stats and exemplary extracurriculars. I’m honestly very surprised that you were not admitted. This scares me very much, for I am also a Columbia hopeful (For class of 2015).

Congrats on UPenn though. It’s an excellent school and I wish you the best of luck!

There’s never any good reason to start second-guessing your chances, because really, you’ll never totally know for sure until you hear back from them. Congrats on UPenn.
