Chance me? Deferred.

Ironically I was never a fan of these chance threads, alas here I am writing one:P

I'm a deferred applicant who has sent some new material between my deferred notification and now.
Applying for Computer Science
I have a 33 ACT (32 Eng, 34 Math, 32 Read, and 35 Science)
I recently sent in two subject tests (800 Math 2, 780 Physics)

My weighted GPA was a 4.2 but my senior first semester GPA is a 4.6 (My only B was in AP Chem)

This year I loaded up on 6 AP Classes (AP Lit, Calc BC, Chem, Physics, Gov/Pol (US), and Macroeconomics)

Apart from being in my school orchestra, I am in a local university's orchestra.
I do theater and either act orplay in the pit( Depending on the musical)

I am a member of NHS and Tri-M( a music honors society) between them I spend plenty of time volunteering.
I have a job at a well known store brand

As far as essays go, I cannot remember my "Why Uchicago" one, but my common app essay compared the Internet to a drug dealer and a pharmacist. And my uncommon essay was about anti jokes.

Thanks to anyone who take the time to read this.

You are taking a very challenging course load your senior year, and you are doing well. I think that will be a big plus. Your objective measurements are excellent. You were deferred from EA which means you’ve already demonstrated interest in a very tangible way.

As far as being admitted, it may be a matter of how you would fill out the class. In other words, how do you balance the class in terms of geography, etc? Unfortunately no one but the admissions committee knows that. But I have no doubt that you are being seriously considered.

Best of luck to you.

Why anti-jokes, may I ask? UC admissions website clearly states that UC loves jokes. hmmm!!
Other than that, you should be in. I don’t understand why the deferment. You’re a strong candidate.

Lana: An anti joke is a something that leads up to a joke, but it isn’t (I.e “Why did the chicken cross the road?”) they are technically still jokes( and my favorite kind of joke) and that is why I wrote about them:P

Thank you to both of you guys! My hunch on on why I was deferred( without trying to sound arrogant) is that I started high school freshman year with iffy grades, and slowly improved scince and I think they wanted to see senior grades and if I kept up the trend

It’s weird, my stats are much worse than yours, and I got deferred. You should be fine, imo.

Thanks! Best of luck to you, out of curiosity, what are you applying for?

Not sure how to answer your question, but I’m guessing bio chem.

Does being deferred aid you in the regular decision round? I think if,significant improvement is shown, it can be a big plus.

^I would believe so however their differed acceptance rate is something like 10% according to their site, which is similar to their regular decision rate, so who knows?

Absolutely! ~2 months until D-Day.

Gah! I can’t wait!

My daughter was deferred. Applied as an English major, heavily involved in theatre all 4 years, ACT 35, weighted GPA 4.6/4.0 top 10% , We contacted the admissions counselor to tell her UChicago was still her #1 choice, submitted updated transcript. Her grade pt went up to 4.7 and her rank increased to top 8%, she got all A’s and 1 B in her 5 AP classes last semester but I am not real confident she’s going to be admitted RD. Fingers crossed. She doesn’t really have a hook, she’s a white kid from the suburbs. :(

^Best of luck. I don’t know about UChicago, but I’m impressed with your daughter’s accomplishments!!

^ When you say suburbs, do you mean suburbs of Chicago?

I heard that the matriculation rate of the Class of 2018 EA pool has already far exceeded expectations and that the RD pool acceptance rate is therefore likely to be much lower than recent years. This does not bode well for 2nd chance deferred students or RD applicants in general.

^considering that last year the overall acceptance rate was about 8-9%, that this year there have been a record number of applications EA (and probably RD), the EA acceptance rate was about 11%, and that matriculation rate in the 2018 EA pool is high (I can confirm this, most kids in the facebook group seem pretty committed), RD kids can be looking at a really low acceptance rate of 5-6%. Assuming that Deferred acceptance rate remains the same, deferred applicants may have a boost here.

Welp, I got wait listed, oh well:P
