Chance me Duke ED UVA UC Berkeley (I'll chance back)

<p>I'm a junior at a top 200 in the country medium sized high school, it may be unreasonable but I've decided I want to be warm for college after living in cold Boston for my whole life. I'm also fairly sure I want to major in engineering (electrical or chemical) with a minor in business or Spanish language.
Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): 2240 (800 CR, 790 M, 650 W) - my essay was very poor and it was my first time, I'm going to take it again to at least get my writing and superscore up
ACT: Not taken
SAT II: 790 Physics, 750+ anticipated for Math 2, Bio, and Spanish
GPA (out of 4.33 = A+): 3.99 unweighted so far (should go up, had a tough first semester of junior year)
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable):Top 5% for sure, but we don't officially rank
AP (place score in parenthesis): 5 in Physics from sophomore year, 5 in Bio anticipated, 4/5 in Euro anticipated
Senior Year Course Load: AP BC Calc, AP English Lit, AP Spanish, AP Econ (Macro+Micro), Honors Computer Aided Design, Wind Ensemble
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): None</p>

<p>Subjective:
Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): 2 years Varsity football, 2 years food justice club, 3 years varsity track, 12 years of piano lessons + performances, 3 years euphonium in school band
Job/Work Experience: 2 years as a cashier
Volunteer/Community service: 3 years of youth basketball coaching, various school-organized one-time community service activities
Summer Activities: post-Sophomore summer-engineering course at UMass Amherst, post-Junior summer-engineering lab work at a medical research lab</p>

<p>Other
State (if domestic applicant): Massachusetts
School Type: Competitive public, consistently send ~5 kids to Harvard and many others to Ivies/Ivy level schools
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Male
Income Bracket(mention if FA candidate): ~130,000, but no financial aid needed due to trust fund set up by wealthy granparents
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Brown single legacy</p>

<p>I just visited Duke, UVA, UMaryland CP, and Johns Hopkins, haven't visited anywhere else besides Brown and UMass Amherst, but plan to visit Penn. I know my ECs are weak but I plan to spend a lot of time with tutors on my essays, so hopefully they will be very good. Chance me at some of these schools (ranked in preference order)?
1. Duke (ED and RD chances?)
2. UVA
3. Penn (ED and RD chances?)
4. UC Berkeley/UCLA
5. Vanderbilt
6. UMD CP
7. Brown (ED and RD chances?)
8. UCLA/JHU
9. Georgia Tech
10. UMass Amherst/Tulane</p>

<p>Duke Pratt: Reach (ED or RD)
UVA: Match
UPenn: Reach (ED or RD)

UCLA: Match
Vanderbilt: Reach
UMD: Low match

<ol>
<li>Duke (ED and RD chances?) - ED good shot. RD tougher than ed. </li>
<li>UVA - not in state makes this a reach…</li>
<li>Penn (ED and RD chances?) - ED low reach rd reach </li>
<li>UC Berkeley/UCLA - match</li>
<li>Vanderbilt - reach (I heard they had an average sat for class if 2018 of 2300…)</li>
<li>UMD CP - yes</li>
<li>Brown (ED and RD chances?) - with legacy I think you should get in to either</li>
<li>UCLA/JHU - UCLA yes, JHU high match</li>
<li>Georgia Tech - match</li>

<p><a href=“DUKE ED CHANCES - Chance Me / Match Me! - College Confidential Forums”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1643813-duke-ed-chances-p1.html&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

<p>If you go for Duke or Penn ED, solid chances, pretty much in for JHU ED; academically you’re in good shape with decent SAT (esp. if you can bump up that writing) and good performance at a probably academically recognized high school (if they’re sending that many kids to top schools). I’d say lack of demonstration of leadership in ECs holds you back a little and would thus make those same schools a bit more of a reach RD. If you can secure some leadership positions and bump that SAT writing in the time you have left you can probably guarantee yourself an ED at Duke or Penn. Brown is hard to judge though - they really look for personality fit. Rest of the schools in your list you should be in good shape for.</p>

<p>If you can bring up your SAT W score to 700+, you should have a good chance for Duke ED particularly for Arts/Science. Note that the ED admission rate is around 25% this year. Right now, only your writing score is below the mid 50 range. </p>

<p>Duke: high match ED, low reach RD
UVA: match
UPenn: high match ED, low reach RD
Berkeley: match
UCLA: match
Vanderbilt: high match
UMD: low match
Brown: high match ED, low reach RD
JHU: high match ED and RD
Ga Tech: match
Tulane: low match
UMass/Amherst: low match</p>

<p>Oh, ■■■ is the food justice club?</p>

<p>Haha, it’s a combination of a gardening club and a community service club. We focus on global food issues as well as local ones, and have events to support them (e.g. a food drive for the local food bank, a hunger banquet to raise money to provide food for undeveloped nations). The other focus of the club is creating a garden at the school so that the local food bank can have fresh fruits and veggies. Not really related to engineering but I thought it was an interesting club, so I decided to join this year.</p>

<ol>
<li>Duke- ED yes, RD tougher but possible </li>
<li>UVA- Should definitely apply early Action (non binding) but they are so unpredictable when it comes to out of state students but you are a very strong candidate

<ol>
<li>Penn (ED and RD chances?)- Good chance, ED</li>
<li>UC Berkeley/UCLA- Definitely qualified but as someone who once lived in California, they are similar to UVA in that they only let in a small number of out of state applicants (all of the UC’s are like that but Berkeley and UCLA more so)</li>
<li>Vanderbilt- Match</li>
<li>UMD CP- Match</li>
<li>Brown (ED and RD chances?)- Good chance but can never be sure with the Ivies, RD</li>
<li>UCLA/JHU- Match</li>
<li>Georgia Tech- Match</li>
<li>UMass Amherst/Tulane- Match</li>
</ol></li>
</ol>
