GPA: 3.86 w (Had a really rough Freshmen year, but have the strongest of upward trends)
Rank: School doesn't rank, but I'd like to say top 10% of class

AP Psych (4), AP Stat (4), AP Lang (5) AP Gov (3)

Senior course load:
AP Lit
AP Calc 2
AP physics C
AP Art History
Spanish
Economics

First Quarter Grades: One B, but BS due to a grade book error, she just hadn't put in all my work.

EC: I don't want to outline all of them to maintain anonymity, but I would say they are very good. I have leadership of many of our school's largest clubs and am quite involved in our community.

Essays: Probably won't stand out very much. Not anything better than the other 3000 kids applying, but definitely not worse.

Misc: I thought my interview went pretty well, at least I have that going for me.

State: WA
Ethnicity: Indian
Gender: M
Income: High

You have fantastic test scores. Aside from the lower GPA I would say Duke is a low reach. Applying ED also gives a slight boost.

How were your essays, recs, and interview? If those really stood out I think you would have an even better shot because stat wise I would say you are in.

Why so much emphasis on scores and grades? It’s not like Duke doesn’t have to choose between students with A-level GPAs and stellar scores.

“I have leadership of many of our school’s largest clubs and am quite involved in our community.”

I think this is true of many of the students applying, and unless you tell us more, it doesn’t really make you stand out from any other applicants. “Excellent extracurriculars” and “involved in/president of a lot of activities” are not synonymous.

“Essays: Probably won’t stand out very much. Not anything better than the other 3000 kids applying, but definitely not worse.”

If you’re confident about this judgment, I would personally write off Duke. Since essays are one of the most important factors among everyone that’s qualified, I don’t see anyone who isn’t stellar in everything else getting into universities like Duke without essays far ahead of the pack. Being average, or even way above average, is definitely not enough considering the 11% acceptance rate at Duke or similar rates at other top colleges. Not to say you can’t change that in the regular round ;)

Judging only from what you said, it doesn’t sound like you really have anything to propel you. I don’t see your chances being non-trivially higher than the average applicant. Nevertheless, best wishes.

Cool, thanks guys! I kinda know what to expect now. I’ll let you know what happens come 12/15. If things don’t work out, there’s plenty of other schools out there.

What is your un-weighted gpa on a 4 point scale? A weighted gpa is pretty much useless unless we know exactly how your school weights grades, and what courses are offered.

What’s your UW GPA? W GPA hardly matters, due to different scaling methods across different schools. But if there’s anything that could even hurt you, it would maybe be the GPA. I think you’re in good shape, and you stand a good chance for an acceptance. Best of luck!

Your chances look pretty decent. Considering your weighted GPA is 3.86, and you feel your essays may blend in with the crowd, it’s a bit iffy. This is not to mention Duke’s 26% rise in ED applicants, most of which will be applying to Trinity. Either way, you’re a solid applicant! I’d give you a 50/50 shot.

I would say Duke ED is a low reach. The GPA is low but I think it’s fine because you are challenging yourself. If you’re ECs are really that great you should have a good shot. I would say Duke is a low reach.

As for USC probably a low match/match. You will probably get in there.

Chance me back please? I also applied to Duke ED and I’m also from Washington.

I say you’re in for USC without out much doubt. For Duke, I’m a little less confident but I think your test scores and activities will pull you through

Unfortunately I got rejected. No worries though, there are plenty of other great schools out there. USC is a better fit for me anyway haha. Thank you to all who took the time to chance me!
