Chance me Duke/Northwestern/Wash. U St. Louis/Penn RD/UMich

Stats: (school does not rank)

Ethnicity: Sinhalese-American (is this a minority? my siblings say that since Asians are well-represented in the educational system, they do not receive preference)

G.P.A uw: 3.93 w: Umm no clue? Never received a B in an AP or honors class though. (I want to go to Duke. They take what you have, so they will see a 3.93) (side note: our school factors A-'s as 4.0s, so my GPA will be reduced to around a 3.8uw)

8 AP classes by graduation. Rigorous schedule.
Senior Year course load includes 5 APs

ACT:
32 composite 10 essay (March testing)
34 composite 8 essay (April testing)
(i assume they'll look at the 34 composite and 10 essay)

Teacher Recs: should be good, but my science teacher (one of my recommenders) calls me a knucklehead because i screw around a lot, but I do get good grades on his tests etc. I believe he thinks im a good kid who gets good grades but is lazy. My teachers know that I will put in good, solid effort if my grade declines. Teachers in our district are told by the administration to write very strong recommendations and hit upon the positives (what school district doesnt? haha), so i assume my recommendations will not be a huge plus factor.

Counselor Rec: should be good. She knows me better than most students, so I believe she'll write a pretty good one. (this one should be a plus factor)

Academic honors:
National Honor society
Middle Years Programme (its like a mini-IB award)
OAA Scholar Athlete
(this list is very slim, i know.)

Extracurriculars:
Member of three varsity teams (cross country, tennis, track)
-Tennis team placed 3rd in the state
-Captain of the Track and field team for two years
-Drum Major of the Marching Band
-Eagle Scout
-Section Leader of Symphony Band, Full Orchestra, Jazz Band, and the Pit band (for the musical) and a sidenote: Our band played at Carnegie Hall last year.
-Member of a Quartet that consistently receives Division I ratings. The Quartet also received a nomination for the State youth arts festival.
-4 Years in Science Olympiad
-4 Years in Quiz Bowl

Essays:
Common application essay was a personal statement. I feel it is very compelling because I develop a theme of me wanting to use my abilities of leadership and etc to help others become the best they can be. I tie this in with a death of a close family member.

***My goal is Duke RD, but I would welcome chances to the other schools (Northwestern/Wash. U St. Louis/Penn RD/UMich EA/ Stanford RD)

so what do you think?

P.S. I won "Worst case of senioritis" in the senior mock election... my first semester senior year GPA is falling. I currently have three B+'s. What will Duke think of this? I am now committing myself to raising these grades. These B+'s are in AP classes.

bumppppouptupyuo

Stanford - Hardest. The only school I was personally rejected to. It hurt a lot lol. Don’t have too much hopes. But you’re a very strong applicant. It’s worth a shot. 7% admit rate.

Penn, Duke - Next hardest. Apps for these schools increased immensely just for ED for these schools. They both had around a ~14% admit rate last year. You can expect it to be around 12% this year I guess.

Northwestern/Washu - Around the 20s% admit rate. Not too bad, but I wouldn’t be surprised if you got into Penn, Duke, or even Stanford and got rejected by one of these two. Still, its a 23~%…a CCer wouldn’t find it too difficult.

UMich - A great school, but the admit rate is high. Is this your safety school? I suggest you pick one more.
Good luck in your endeavors.

bump. thanks so far
