Chance me - EA

I posted it earlier in the giant thread thing but my nerves for results have me on edge. I applied to SFS for International Studies but I think I’m gonna move more in the direction of Regional Studies

SAT Subject Tests: They were all so bad. I took them the day of Homecoming so naturally I was not even in the slightest bit focused…I don’t remember them off the top of my head but none broke the 600 threshold.
ACT: 31 (Superscore of 32 but I know that doesn’t matter lol)
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.95
Weighted GPA (out of 5.0): 4.712
Rank: 1/167

APs/IBs: IB wasn’t offered and I chose not to take AP classes because my school only offered five or so and from what I heard they were not academically enriching and the teaching was not good…one year only one person got a 5 on the AP Gov test…
Dual Enrollment: I took my entire schedule at a local university beginning the fall of my junior year. I’m not expecting these credits to be honored but I was just looking for an alternative educational experience.
-Principles of Microeconomics & Macroeconomics, College Writing 1 & 2, World and American Politics, Social Problems, Personal Finance, Oceanography, Explorations of Modern Mathematics
Senior Year Course Load:
-Fall: Comparative Politics, Latinos in American Society, Survey of Rock Music History (needed a fine arts credit to graduate lol), Socioeconomic Impact of Hip Hop, Issues of Law and Society
-Spring: Introduction to Public Policy, Public Communication in Society, Caribbean Studies, Panafrican Women’s Literature, Black Experience I

Extracurriculars:
-4 Year Varsity Letter Winner (Girls Soccer) and 2 Year Varsity Letter Winner (Cheerleading)
-Senior Girls Soccer Captain, won conference, state and national awards on my high school team
-Staff member and Director of Fun on my high school’s radio station, WSTB
-Singer, Actress, and Dancer in my community theater program
-Member of NHS
-Delegate at Buckeye Girls State, was my party’s nominee for Lieutenant Governor but lost in the general election, went on to be appointed as Director of the Department of Transportation
-2016 Homecoming Court Member (why not add that lol)
-Member of my high school’s academic challenge team
-Member of my high school’s leadership team
-Volunteer with my soccer team…together we ran a local soccer camp and collected cans for the needy
-Volunteer at my school district’s childcare service
-Volunteer with a service program at my grandma’s church

Job/Work Experience:
-Worked at a trampoline park my Junior year
-Catered over the summer in between Junior year and Senior Year
-Currently work at a pizza parlor

Summer Activities:

  • Babysitting, dogsitting
-Most of my summers were consumed by my aforementioned extracurriculars
Essays (rating 1-10, details): 9, I had my counselor and parents review them with me. My personal one was just that; I literally poured my heart out and sobbed while reading it to my parents. I think it really captures who I am.
Recommendations: I know mine is super good, I put all my eggs in the basket of my College Writing/Latinos in American Society professor because she is an amazing writer and has seen me grow more than anyone else over the last year.
Interview: I thought it went rather well. The man who interviewed me was nice, but was somewhat intimidating. We talked about everything about the sports culture to the journey my family took to get to America, so it was an interesting interview.

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
Intended Major: International Studies, though I may shift to Latin American Regional Studies
State: Ohio
School Type: Public Suburban
Ethnicity: Mexican American
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: Upper Middle Class
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): I am both a first and second generation immigrant and wear my Mexican ethnicity on my sleeve. Also, I don’t know if this counts for anything, but my interviewer said I am the first person from my high school he has ever interviewed.

Any input will hopefully calm my nerves…thanks!

Hi! I’m also an early action applicant so I feel your pain!! Your class rank, ECs, and background (especially the first generation and Mexican American from Ohio factors) should definitely be helpful. The only thing that they might not love is the subject test scores, but at least you took them and have strong academics otherwise. I also didn’t do too well on my subject tests so I’m really hoping they won’t consider them as heavily as a normal SAT/ACT score. Overall you seem like a really strong applicant to me! I wish that I could be more helpful but I’m in the same boat you’re in! Good luck with everything!!!
