Applying to UCSD, UCB, UCLA, and UCI
Major: Economics
GPA: 3.87
Major requirements: completed except for Cal3 which will be finished by Spring '14
TAG: no
IGETC: will be completed by this spring
1 award and 1 honor from high school which are English Development Award and California Scholarship Federation.
64 volunteer hours for a local dentist office. 5 hours for VCSA
Working part-time as a billing assistant for a dentist office.
Sophomore transfer
Currently having 42 units. Will take Winter Intersession.
I have 1 B in one of my major required classes which is Cal2.

I’d say you have a decent chance at all of those schools, but UCLA’s econ major is extremely impacted. Same for Berkeley. Your GPA is still competitive, though.

Which school requires you to do calc 3? I thought that was optional for econ majors.

@Cayton: UCSD requires Calc 3 I think. By the way, would the amount of units I earned be a disadvantage to me? I’m a sophomore in community college and only have 42 units by this semester.

So - what does volunteering for a dentist have to do with being an Econ major? I’m assuming that’s just an interest. Also, I don’t think they care about high school extracurriculars if you’re a community college transfer at junior status.

You have a good chance - it’s competitive though. I would’ve applied to the Mathematics/Economics major at UCLA. There’s more prereqs but I know it’s a good acceptance rate. Best of luck!

You’re chances are pretty good.
I got in this past spring with a 3.9 to all of those, except UCSD because I did not apply there. My ECs were not really related to my major in anyway, and I had one pre-req to finish at the time of application.
I’d say just make sure you have 60 units by the end of spring, have a complete and full application as much as possible, and make sure your personal statement is good because it will be a major factor in admission to Berk, LA and Irvine.
Why are you not able to TAG to any of the UCs?

@jacefromLA: I am not eligible for TAG so I didn’t apply I am hoping to raise my GPA by the end of this fall to 3.9. Did you do TAG last year? Oh and thank you for replying to my post. @Cayton: thank you @ocnative: thanks a lot.

UCSD says you need Calc 3, but they will allow you to complete that requirement there after your admission.
(I was offered admission to UCSD this spring, and I only finished up to Calc 2)

If you are considering going on to a PhD program in economics, you will want to take calculus 3, linear algebra, differential equations, real analysis, and a mathematical probability course (the latter two courses are upper division courses that you would take after transfer). If that is your goal, you may want to consider the mathematical economics major offered at some campuses like UCLA. At UCLA, the mathematical economics major is usually less selective than the economics or business economics major: [Profile of Admitted Transfer Students by Major, Fall 2013 - UCLA Undergraduate Admissions](http://www.admissions.ucla.edu/prospect/Adm_tr/Tr_Prof13_mjr.htm)

miinhdadream: I tagged to Riverside initially because I thought I really wanted a business curriculum but if I could have I would have probably done something like Davis or SB. And you’re welcome for me replying. Hope your app came, or is coming, together nicely.

I think you will get into all those schools. I transferred to Berkeley this year as econ and here were my stats just to give you an idea

GPA 3.95
Prereqs complete: No calculus at all. Took Calc 1 over the summer and Calc 2 right now (LOL).
EC’s: I coached and worked a lot but nothing spectacular.
Personal Statement: Didn’t even proofread it and it was super generic just wrote about coaching.

I think you’ll be fine after you get accepted and choose Berkeley I’ll buy you a beer.
